I was wondering if someone could enlighten me on some registration issues.
Basically, I bought a 914 years ago, never registered it in my name.. the title is good (shows a Lien but also is signed and dated as Lien released), but still in the last owner's name (would basically be impossible to track down at this point). Now I've sold the car, and the buyer is having issues registering. Apparently Texas needs to establish a value to know what to charge for tax. This is a change since I've last titled a 'new to me' car. You used to could show the sale price on the title or a bill of sale. They say an authorized dealer or an insurance adjuster has to do the appraisal. Maybe I'm just way behind the times on registration changes but has anyone else run into this? |

I ran into this on an old Ford F100 I bought. They claimed it was worth some crazy number when I legitimately purchased it for $1000 (it was a project foooor sure)
They said I needed to provide proof that it was worth that, so I had a friend who ran a shop put together a quote for essentially a full project, replacing everything, paint, etc. I sent that quote in, with photos to proove the trucks condition, they accepted that and only charged the tax required for a $1k car. I thought it was going to be the same deal for my 914 when I got it (also for around $1k) but I guess they just accepted my stated price. |

Have the new owner take it to Mayo Performance in Euless and have Ed Mayo do an appraisal. He is the national PCA tech rep for 914s. The state should accept the appraisal as the value.
We have Elwood done every so often for the insurance value. Hagerty always takes his appraisal as gospel. I don't remember how much Ed charges for it. Sorry.... |

Just went through this. Go to Texas DMV and look up paper work for BONDED title. You will need appraiser and a bonding company. Bond can run upward to $$$.

You have a title but not signed? Hold a pen in your left hand and put the title in your name or just pay a broker in Wyoming 450.00

You have a title but not signed? Hold a pen in your left hand and put the title in your name or just pay a broker in Wyoming 450.00 Yea, sometimes you just have to get the spirit of the prior owner to sign the title. We also have a Montana LLC for difficult situations. Every state is different and a lot depends on who at the DMV you talk to. I use a title company because for a minimal charge, they seem to make things work that the dmv might question (like sale price) if I did it in person. |

It's been a while but last time i had a similar issue with a title here in CA, i went to my local AAA branch and they took care of everything.
