all,
my turn signal does not reset by itself. After digging around, i think mine is broken. here is a pic of mine: with a little bit of the search engine i found this post. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=346481 the column in question has a big spring on it that looks like the King Ranch emblem. I have a 1973 and i have been able to find some newish switches on Ebay and even some new ones from Sierra Madre: https://sierramadrecollection.com/products/...ASABEgLhffD_BwE but from the thread listed above, the one from SMC might not be the correct part. does anyone have a good source for the part? Also, im seeing parts that have a #5 or #6 appended to the part number 91461391315 which seems to be the part number but with different versions. Can anyone help with the part number i should be looking for? And if i can use a 75-76 as this seems to be the latest part available? And last but not least! is there a how-to on pulling out the steering column front part where all the turn and wiper controls are? im guessing i just need to pull the front part out and not the whole column. i think there is a bearing in there that could probably be replaced as well. I know this is alot, but any help is greatly appreciated. Steve Kennemer Wimberley TX |

Is been a while since I did this. You need to start by removing the lower dash bolster. I think it’s five screws. From there you can look underneath the dash and can see the white plugs that have to be unplugged. One is for the turn signal and the other is for the wiper. Take out the 4 screws you see there on the plate below the steering wheel. Then you carefully pull that plate up and both mechanisms slide out of the steering column. You can use the stalks to help move it up. It helps to push the plugs up from under the dash. Be careful as all that plastic is old and brittle and is easy to damage. I ordered a new switch from Auto Atlanta. I can’t remember but some of these parts are no longer available and they have replaced them with 944 parts.
When you disassemble the turn signal from the wiper switch be extra carful. They sort of clip together and things are brittle. You need those plastic parts in tact to reassemble everything. Guiding all of it back down the column is tedious. Just go slow and be careful. You have to work at it to get is all lined up right to get the 4 screws back in. Once you’re ready to put the steering wheel back on be careful not to damage the cancel nub with the cancel ring. There are some better instruction posts around but this is the basics. |
