Sorry, but I didn't take pictures of the new belts mounted behind the backpad because installation is the reverse of removal. This is an easy project. I took my time over two evenings. Best of luck! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Would it be a problem to use the hardware they supply, asides from the looks? I don't have the balls to try sewing up a seatbelt.

Yeah, I know what you are saying about taking apart seatbelts. Besides being ugly, the inboard part of the new belts (I call it the female end) are too long making the anchor point too high off your hip when seated - not safe IMHO. Even then, you need to use a small heat gun to warp the plastic housing to fit around the contour of the seat and center seat pad. Again, I went hardcore on re-sewing the belt using the same sewing pattern. You can see this pattern in the last picture. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

Digging up an old thread.

The place Midtowner got his belts from have some other belts available that may be more suitable than the ones he got (which may not have been available, then).

The place is also called SeatBeltPros.com, they seem to use both domain names, and are actually a Yahoo! Store (yeah, irrelevant detail, I work in the biz, so...)

They have three-point belts with chromed aircraft style buckles as commonly seen on cars from the early 70s. These belts are adjustable at the buckle end, so his very good objection to the length of the buckle piece being too long is no longer an issue. They have belts that are both retractable into reels or fixed, like early stock belts. They also have two lengths of the non-adjustable style buckle, 12" and 20". The 20" does look way too long for a 914. The 12" is probably about right.

My new-to-me FIAT has moldy old belts in it, so I'm replacing them, and I'll be getting a set from this place myself. For the 914, I'll probably get a six-point harness from a racing shop.

6 point belts aren't street legal though - isn't that correct? Are you just going to chance it?

I've never had any legal problems with five-points. Back when I drove my race cars to work every day (Not that long ago, really...) I got pulled up a couple of times by Chippies that saw the stock belt hanging. One guy says "I pulled you over because I thought you weren't wearing wour seat belt but you're bolted in there pretty damn good, aren't you?" and let me go with a big grin and "Have a great day".

I know five points aren't DOT legal, but I don't think the average cop is going to pick that particular nit.

Of course if you're attitude asks him to... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Hope ya used the right sewing pattern and the right thread....

There is a specific pattern to the sewing that the Government spent a lotta time and money on to develop for pilots and it was picked up by the seatbelt manufacturers....

Somewheres there is a MIL Spec on it....
