According to researchers, the last bigun' (subduction zone quake) off the coast of Orygun was about 300 years ago.
Being as it's on about a 300 year cycle.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) |

I moved to get a front row seat. If the big wave takes me, you'll know I was mostly happy to be here, if a bit terrified in that last moment. We do have the turbo wagen aimed towards higher ground just in case we do get a warning. The '63 alaska quake made a good sized wave here...one of the locals has tsunami board leaned up against his place..an upcoming sport...you ride the big one inland....along with all the cars and houses and trees...

As a Canadian I have noticed that the US news media has a tendancy to promote and spread paranoia about just about everything.....Just ignore it all and LIVE!
Just my outlook....Nothing is as bad as they make it out to be. |

Yeah, right, tell it to the Indonesians. Many would have been alive today had they....and many Europeans....recognized what that receeding water meant. A 9.0 subduction zone quake will ruin your day....even in Canada, eh? I'm not an alarmist, but I don't believe that ignorance is bliss. |

kinda trippy how the most primitave people on a low lying island all knew what to do... run inland.. (religeous beliefs - cultural hertiage) all but 10 survived.... now... i agree with JP. There does not seem to be an answer at this time, they were really focusing on what caused last years Tsunami, how the plates shifted and the ability to some time into the future be able to look at the plates off our coast and predict when and where this could happen here. They were saying that when the plates shifted, the one plate was pushed up approx 40 feet whaich caused some of the islands to raise approx 10 feet, they showed pictures of those islands with larger beach areas and exposed coral now. The waves were initially calculated at over 500 miles an hour. Apparently, as the wave moves towards the land and into shallower water, that displaces the water forcing a title wave. Their prediction was not too good for our coastal cities, They assumed we would have about 15 minutes to get out of the area to higher ground. What was pretty cool how they were able to actually photgraph the actual plates themselves, it looks very similar to our eartquake faults that you see in the mountain areas. Yah, JP was right, they figured it at a 9.0. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) I forgot, they said the titlewave travelled around the earth 3 times. |

The overall grand plan is to eventually pump water down to the plate boundery to lube up the slip zone so earthquakes don't happen.
When I lived in Oregon, all you hear about was either Mt Hood blowing us all away or the San Juan cutting lose, and destroying what ever Hood didn't get. Now in Utah they assure me that there is a big Fault that runs right under the house, and its not popped in so long that when it goes people are going to feel it in Cuba. Screw that. Hand me another beer. If shit goes wrong, I can only hope its quick. |
