Note to Aaron...

A Really lean engine running with a small exhaust can run over 1500 degrees...

Maybe hotter.

Especially if it's turboed..........................

Of coarse long before 1500 EGT the pistons are melting and the engine is starting to degrade by the second.. Lotsa stuff is glowing really red.. Internally and externally.

How do i know this you ask...???????

I don't need a book to tell me..

So I am driving my little turbo street racer (Talon) and I am racing a Renault R5 turbo on the freeway... Kicking it's french ass..... Until....... I start to lose power... Like fast.. I check my gauges and OH.. CRAP

EGT.... Like almost PEGGED......

I find out later...............................................

I dropped an intake manifold to internal waste gate line (little rubber guy) on my TURBO 4 banger.

That makes the turbo shoot for the moon... (Or Hell in this case)

I had been driving floored for maybe a minute before the engine went into thermal overload.

The turbo was in max boost.. No waste gate for 60 seconds. Probably 22-28 LBS of boost.

No problem right... ???

NOT... My ECU setting was setup for 14 bs of boost..

That meant.. SUPER LEAN.....

Not enough fuel for the boost. And past the point of DELTA for the Turbo.

I saw the EGT reading about 1650+ degrees. When i glanced down at it. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif)

That was a very expensive little rubber hose.. I now safety wire everything but my underwear since then.

Don't even start Slits.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)

So yeah.... Exhaust can get very hot..

Twystd1

P.S. Thanks for the question Aaron... I was bored and needed to write something that was meaningless....

The answer is certain areas of your exhaust may indeed get over 1400 degrees. My Vanagon has certain areas of the exhaust pipes that seem to get hotter than others and burn the paint off in certain local areas (not near the head or on a bend). (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/blink.gif)

Tried almost all paints and haven't found ANY paint worth a crap yet...

Even tried that super duper Bill Hirsch stainless paint for high heat and concours cars..... no joy (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif)

Gad....Claytonian The First finally tells the truth (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Rich mixture......1200 degrees on an EGT

Lean stumble mixture......1600 degrees on an EGT

Aaron, I've used Xtreme Heat Coat in Camarillo CA for LONG time. If you want a good prep/ coating/ curing --and never want to do it over again (see: labor)--go to Allan @ 805-388-9983. EGTs cool as they move away from the port, and Xtremes "Hi Lustre Silver" keeps the exhaust moving out quickly. My experience is that the tubes are cool 15 minutes after shutdown.
BTW- Allan's prices are about 40% under J-Hot, and real customer service (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
This is the stuff:

My input on the various hi-temp coatings..

Don't waste your time with anything that comes in a spray can or you can apply yourself.

I coated a set of S&S headers for my VW THING - headers were brand new, I bead blasted them to bare metal, performed to POR's specifications the Metal Ready process (I'm quite anal like that), applied the POR20 and within two weeks, it was coming off in huge flakes. The time I spent, and the money for the POR20, Metal Ready, blast media etc. was only about 100 dollars less than sending it out to Jet-Hot Coating. My friend had his S&S system jet-hot coated before I tried the POR20 routine and his still looks brand new - my exhaust system might have lasted another year, at most.

Spend the money for jet-hot or ceramic coatings - it's worth every penny. I had my 2.0L 914 muffler, which has been cut open and de-baffled a bit, jet-hot coated and it still looks great several years later.

100.00 is cheap. Make sure they are shooting the inside and the outside for that price. Dumb to just have it done on the outside.. it will rust from the inside out.

Aaron,

I see 800+ coming off the heads with a laser temp gun when the engine is warm. I do this to see if all 4 are firing correctly when I bust off a new engine.

$4.99 is cheeper. Rattle can Stove paint.....course I blasted off the shit that came on em' first.
I've had to touch em' up once in 6-7 years. They got whitish & blotchy in spots.....no rust. I figure they'll rot out from the inside.

If ya spend 100 bucks on coating your headers, turn in your CSOB card. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

Actually I think stove paint is better than the VHT etc.
I got tired of painting my MC pipe and bought a SS system.
Bead blasted, cleaned with solvent and painted that sucker several times.

I Jet Hot coated a 914 header.
