Looking over the pictures of the Dunkel event, I notice that there are pretty much 2 ways that folks seem to go with mirrors. They either stay stock or go with something that looks like the cheap Italian mirrors that you can get at any FLAP. In my opinion the later make a really fine car look really bad.
On my car I tried putting 911 mirrors on (the rectangular ones). These met my goals of a larger mirror surface and a mirror with "break away" functionality so that I wouldn't have to readjust them every time someone bumped them. The problem with these is the holes that you have to cut into the doors and the difficulty of getting this right. Fortunately, I was working with old doors that I planned to replace 'cuz I didn't get it right. So does anyone know of an aftermarket mirror that meets these goals and is easy to mount? How about a foolproof way to mount either the rectangular or oval style mirrors from the 911 or newer Porsches? There is one that I saw in the Dunkel pictures that looks like it could fit the bill, but I don't know what it is. Anybody know? http://www.pelicanparts.com/swapmeet_pics/...ML/Page-691.htm |

Its another cheapy from your local flaps. Same "Vitoli" brand as the baby turbo that was really popular on the VW bugs way back.
Great thread idea. I personally stay stock unless the car has GT flares, then a larger mirror doesnt look bad on the car. I hate coming up from behind a 914 with huge mirrors. It reminds me of the kids we used to make fun of in school with big ears (OH, wait that was me..LOL) B |

I agree, on a 914 with some kind of flares I think 911/944/928 flag mirrors look good.
The problem as I see it (and I've been looking at it) is that 99% of factory mirrors these days don't mount on the door like ours but in the triangular area between the A pillar and the door. So you're looking at either adapting those (more work than most people want to take on), using the flag mirrors, or some other aftermarket POS. I've been looking for a pair of flag mirrors to go on my car for a while now. Just waiting for the right pair at the right price. |

I agree that STOCK is the way to go.. I have two sitting in my garage waiting
for the repaint. My car currently has VITALONI BABY TORNADOs. These don't look all that bad but definitely not stock. If you like the clean look, you can paint these to match the car. Good luck! |

Andy,
I put those on the race car when I first got it. Don't waste your time. You can't see shit out of them. I ended up throwing them in the trash! I've got a pair of original mirrors that I'll use on the '72 and I'm looking for another pair for the race car. That plastic crap is crap! CHA914, there are quite a few racecars with them on it, I think the A-Pillar is where you want to attach them, not the glass. Here is a good pic of really nice 914 with the top ones in your pic. (IMG:http://ultimate914.com/MOTORSPORTS_WE/photo12/IMAG0000.JPG) Pegasus Racing sells those in plastic and CF. |

Since I've posted this pic, does anyone know where that wing came from?
It is the nicest big ol wing I've seen on a 914. It's the uprights that impress me. |

The other problem with aftermarket mirrors is that I don't see anyone making them with parabolic glass for the passenger side. That's another vote for the flag mirrors for me.

The small carbon fiber looking ones dont use glass. Its a mirrored tape. We use one on my tube car.
That wing is similar to what Roger Sheridan uses. It sits on two oval shaped tubes supplied by aircraft spruce. If you really want to know where the wings come from.. I can cough up the info. B |

The uprights look like they are adjustable, possibly from in the car like sway bars.
Anyone else see that, or am i hoping? The mirrors from Pegasus do come in Convex and Flat versions. |

Yes, in fact that car is my current wallpaper on my office PC! I am fairly certain the guy who just did some of the suspension work on my car was one of the builders (suspension mainly) of that yellow car. His name is George Browne. I am not positive that is one of his wings, but he does have his own leading-edge wing design that is fabbed in c/f and significantly cheaper than some of the others on the market. The Ottos cars have similar wing setups, which he also did. George also knows Kerry Eisenlohr (sp?) the ERP guy and they supposedly share ideas about suspension bits and setup instruments, like laser bump steer gauges and that kind of thing. He has a very old and very superficial web page here http://www.zpeed.com/browne&son.html His email may not be working right now but he can be reached thru Ottos usually. |

Chris,
I used to keep an 8x10 of that picture hanging in my office in Hollyweird when I was there. It still confuses me about 914-GT look or Sheridan body kit. Now that I've got a 914 for the street I may do Sheridan's narrow kit, but damn, I like the looks of a 914-6 GT. Any opinions on the subject? |

Start a new thread on the body work. (Just got off the phone with Roger..so I'm a little biased) LOL
Andy (my favorite American hater.lol) The mirror you pictured wont work on the 914 door unless you mount it way down the side of the door. I tried them back in 1993 or so on a 914. They dont lay over far enough. They end up in the air and not flat like you see them. The mounting base doesnt allow them to lay out flat. I like them a lot, but tried and tried to make them work. Andy, pleaz spare us the details, danke schön (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
I've got a good pic of the yellow car's rear wing The uprights are adjustable to change the angle of the wing IIRC I'll post the pic when I get home tonight... On the fg body work... I finally found a shop that would send a full set of GT flared fenders across the big pond without bankrupting me, so I should have these pretty soon! (yes, I'm exited, can you notice? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/boldblue.gif) ) For the mirrors... I think the 911/944 flag mirrors are a bit on the bulky side for a narrow bodied 914 You should try and find the 924 flag mirrors. They look very similar, but are somewhat slinkier cheers, Jeroen |
