Hardware has arrived and I've built 5 of each bar over the weekend. I still need to paint them and package the hardware. The box to ship them in has been a difficult one. I have some flouresent light bulb boxes that will do the trick, but I was hoping for a double thickness box. These are soon to arrive on the resources page. I want to write up some instructions and recommendations on safety tow chains as the SB and DT bars don't come with them.

Good stuff David. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
I know the earlier pics were the first prototype. Did you test to make sure that the tow bar would have full up and down range of motion in both mounting holes?
In the top hole it looks as though the bar would contact the mounting tab if the tongue of the bar was down low...like going over a crown in the road or a drive way that is low on both sides and raised in the center.
Thanks

No Andrew....you have seen enough.....don't you have studying to do?

Seriously though....I am busy with "real" work this week and will be posting the new products on my rescources page next week. That is when I will accept any orders and start shipping from stock. I will have shots of both styles, from various angles, with various spoilers/bumpers and with details of the type of bars you can use.

I was finishing up the Spec Miata and 944 units this week and now that is done, I can get back to the tow bar project. I am going fishing this weekend with the inlaws, so next week is the rollout.

So we have product now. I've built 5 of each bracket (SuperBeetle bar style and Reese bar style). Three have been shipped to date. I found that my home welder couldn't get full penetration on the 3/8" plate (Mike "*" Z...insert your joke here), so I built them at work in the evenings. I have enough precut parts to produce 50 bars (25 of each style). Now I have an allignment jig, the production goes a lot faster.

I have been very busy with my day job and the last two weekends with familty outings.....well, you know how it goes. I also discovered a market with 944 and Spec Miata race eyes, and that has kept me hopping a bit in the evenings with packing up parts. I own three 914s, so my interest is in getting back to the tow bar project.

The web page with full details including ordering and installation instructions should be up by Wednesday. Thanks for your patience. My goal was to make sure folks could get these in their hands well before the WCC06 to allow some time for fitment, location of a tow bar, lights and general shake down. I have offered to Craig that I will donate one of each style as prizes for the WCC.

A few pics attached as a teaser....

Thanks for your patience guys.........

looks good David,

only issue I have is that there are some rusty POS 914's/911's that shouldn't be towed from that location....let's hope the owners check and double check before installing and using.....

oh yea, in your instructions, I'd add a warning about driving the car with the bracket in place on lowered cars if they go up steep driveways.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

The issue of rust buckets is covered in the instructions...........Good point though. If you have to drag a rusted hulk home, do it with a trailer.

The bar is not the lowest point on the front end and does not stick out past the front of the body. A special edition spoiler will hit the ground before my bar does. I believe Leo had some contact issues with his run out east with his unit. I watched his progress closely so that I could avoid similar issues. There is lots of clearance and a beefy bracket that can take the abuse.
