Thanks guys.....here is the style of the new front tab. There will of course be two on each side. This is just a mock up to check the height of the bar in relation to the SE spoiler and the hitch on the car. I like the two hole option and will produce them in this fashion. There is room to move futher up with one more hole (3), but the strength is then reduced, so I think this will do it.

Don't take the looks of this mock up too seriously, as it was done in 1/4" plate for ease of fabrication. The 3/8" versions are being cut by my guy today and I will work on the jigs over the weekend. If I can rob a few minutes from work, I will draw the tabs for the other style bar. There will be two offerings.....one for the Super Beetle bar and one for the adjustable bar.

I have watched this thread for a while, and I need to put in my 2 cents worth. I have a Super Beetle towbar based setup much like the design here. I had to cut the tow bar tubing and rotate the tabs 180 degrees to gain ground clearance. It might be well to check that before you go too far! The Cap'n

It seems to me that this set up could do double duty as a tow bar mounting point and a trailer tie down point with a hitch pin secured in each bracket. What do you guys think? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif)

Was thinking the same thing. Even use it for track towing the same way with the pin in place. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

Not the right way top tie a car down. Accepted practice is to tie down the suspension, or better yet, the wheels. All the flat beds around here use soft straps through the wheels on every car that can accept the method. BMW insists on it for the newer cars. The Cap'n

Cap'n, besides just peeing on the campfire, please post a picture of your bracket and towbar setup. (I was temped to give you the "This thread is worthless without pictures", but held off) It might be that your attachment brackets come in very low to the gound or your hitch on your vehicle is very high. I'm sure the group would like to see the details behind your modification of the SB bar. Thanks in advance for posting the pictures.

BTW. I never tie my cars down by the wheels on a trailer as the double action effect of two sets of springs on Texas roads makes for some unique handling of the trailer. Especially on a bridge on I-10 coming into Houston. The suspension on my trailer does a great job on its own. To each his own. We all have different equipment, experiences and preferences.

I always do what BMW suggests! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

Isn't this method "tying down the suspension"? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/huh.gif)

I'm going to need that one also. I'd rather buy a Draw-Tite than a generic super beetle unit. Thye're should be more readily available and more adaptable to other cars.

It's the Drawtite towbar, the Ebay model?

So you can see what a new unit would cost:

Draw Tite tow bar on etrailer.com

You should also be able to buy a Draw Tite adjustable tow bar in just about any major city.

That's the one! It uses 1/2" pins and has an adjustable spread on the bars. There are many other copies of this item on the market. I think that DrawTite just buys it and slaps a sticker on it. It is longer than the SB bar and has rectangular tubes. I believe it to be much stronger and more versitile. DLee
