I'm working on a heat exchanger idea. Unless I build it out of stainless it will rust out up here in a year just sitting in the garage. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) Jet-Hot coatings and that type of stuff is ok for a set of headers but I would think it would be cost prohibative for a complete system with heat exchangers.
Anyone ever had gavanizing done? How about aluminizing? Exhaust parts are often coated with this process. It has to be inexpensive and well suited for round pipe and odd shapes. I could always use Zinc rich weld though primer. That's what I used on the exhaust outlet I made for the Alien. It still looks good. Toss out some ideas. (Ide'ers) |

Rick,
Here at my fab shop,we send off product every week. Every state, has a few galvanizing shops spread out thru-out their states. The cost here is about .27cents a lb.however, most places will tell you they 'll have a minimun charge, mostly in the $2-300.00 range. So,you'll need a hundred lbs. or so to meet a minimum. Galvanizing is a 2-3 stage dippping process, and the places are usually using tanks 20-40'long, x 10-20'wide, x 15' or so deep.the last stage is the galvanizing, and the tank is cooking at about 800 degrees. Most all of them are low tech operations. Translation, they'll hang your parts manually on racks for dipping, using illegal mexican labor,so you should expect to be told from time to time, that some parts got lost. Hope it helps, Ron |

Rick, try ceramic coatings. Techline even has some you can do yourself. I recently had a shop do my complete system in Colorguard Titanium, and am quite pleased. The finish is durable and looks absolutely stock, but with higher performance.

Interesting stuff. So, did you coat your heat exchangers also? Will the coating stick to stainless.

Here is a photo of one of my Y-tubes with the Techline Colorguard-Titanium applied. It is identical looking compared to the stock coating, and it should provide some heating and corrosion-protection benefits:

There is a place up here that does galvanizing. My neibour built seat pedistals for his boat. Plate with pipe welded to it, smaller diameter pipe with heavy spring at bottom goes inside larger pipe and another plate at the top to mount the seat to. Had them galvanized and then painted them.

In a pinch you can use the cold galvanizing spray that welders use after a burn....very heavy body stuff...several brands available...I can give you a list if you need it Rick...

I have seen 993 guys coat there entire exhaust systems and heat exhangers with the jet-hot product. I am not sure why you think it is cost prohibitive, I think it is the perfect solution for protection and looks. -Britain |

I had mine done in an aluminized coating before installation. I didn't want the factory six heat exchangers to rot away.

One kid in collage, live in girl friend in collage, second kid musician, with about 15 friends here everyday, eating us out of house and home, (I cook for them all (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/jsharp.gif) ) paying for gas for everyones cars, heating a 100+ year old Victoian home @ $ 750.00 per month, Taxes on the lake place due, My transaxle is at Brad Mayeurs place getting a top notch rebuild, The list goes on. I wouldn't change any of it. But I do need to look for a low cost solution for a nice protective coating. I've never had it done before. I (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif) your exhaust. If it's only in the $ 200.00 to $ 300.00 range, that's not outragous. |

I used a powdercoating/ceramic coating place in Carrollton. I got the location from Larry Dildine's (sparetimetoys) thread on powder doating his valve covers. I have the name and address at home. I will get it for you. Or maybe Larry has it handy. |

Rich,
I just read an article in one of my old VWTrends magazine... It was all about a DIY alumizing kit. It sounded alot like powder coating, though with a few more steps, pre-heating, and baking times were critical... So, if the part fits in an oven, it sounds like you could DIY... Rich |
