A buddy of mine is telling me to weld the reinforcement plates onto the outside of the inner-fender.
I thought you did it from the inside with the tank out (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

Is that a good idea?? Bad??

Why?

Welding to the outside will add a "total width" dimension that depending on the type of bar bushing mounts may interfere with the positioning of the "arms" coming off the bar.

It's better to sandwich the reinforcement plate with the sheet metal of the car.

I would take the time and do right with removing the tank...I made my own reinforcements out of 1/4" plate, tapped with threads. Welded from the inside. DH

what kind of plate are you thinking of??? 3/8" or ??? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

besides, even if one uses .040" sheetmetal, it would be easy to remove .040" from the bracket to make up for it....

...........

waiting for my shipping/recieving guy to finish up his regular stuff before he can help me out....

Guess what ....
thats how the factory "did it"
see the thread in the resource section where I autopsyed
the mounts out of one of my cars.
They cut 4 holes the spot and blob welded the triangle mount to the inside of the fenderwell. Nothing was welded inside the firewall.

Hmmmmmmmmm... mine have been different. Sandwiched from the inside between the metal for the fenderwell and that shelf. That's how I knew it was factory... it was actually sandwiched between two pieces of metal. Sounds like they had different procedures for different years maybe...

Come to think of it... I remember having a set like Rich describes. I got them from Brad Meyeir (sorry if I butchered your name Brad).

They were cut from the car but, it was a thin metal, the same gauge as the body and it has the nuts spot welded to the back of it. If I recall... I thought it was spot welded but it could have been seam welded (I just remember grinding the welds to get the piece) to the fender well from the outside so... I've seen both.
