Sandy and I have been talking about buying a piece of property, small house, or a small commercial building off the beaten path along route 66 or something.  Were sick of snow and cold weather and long winters.

Rick, you've been out our way, sort of. There are some really fun communities just north of Rio Rancho on Hwy 550, between here and Durango CO. I would look at San Ysidro, Jemez Springs, and Aztec. All 3 are close to great mountain fun. Skiing, Snowboarding, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, twisty roads to drive, fishing (stream and lake) as well as microbrew and superb food. If I had money I didn't know what to do with, I'd buy a cabin (or put one up, since you're obviously capable) in Jemez Springs, just outside of the Soda Dam. You are 1/2 hour from Rio Rancho, and 45 min from Santa Fe, Albuquerque or Los Alamos. All 3 have great ski hills, but the snow is really minimal in Jemez Springs. Days are around 50 or so most of the winter. You'll probably only have 3 storms of 3-7 inches all winter, and the summers are gorgeous!!!!

It'd be nice to have you guys as a neighbor when I strike it rich and get my own cabin!!!! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif)

Weather here in the NW part of Oregon changes every year but, on the average, it is mostly wet with some occasional snow in the Portland Metro area, usually 1-3 times a year. Six inches above 1000 feet in elevation is considered "heavy" and closes schools. That typically translates to about half that depth on the valley floor. We used to say that summer was from the 4th of July to Labor Day, but that doesn't seem true anymore. Sometimes a nice Indian Summer will grace our presence. Lots of rain, but, hey, it's Oregon and we don't mind. No salt on the roads during snow or ice either.

I've always been impressed with Flagstaff, AZ; been thru there a couple times in the last ten years. Looks like a nice laid-back community and a college town, not too hot in the summer, some snow in the winter but nothing like Minnesota! (its at a higher elevation than most of AZ).

Another possibility would be northern NM, north of Santa Fe, just south of CO; always been impressed with this area.

Another contender would be the Minden/Gardnerville area just southwest of Carson City, NV; fast growing area with a nice climate, nice school system (from what I hear) and NO state income taxes.

Hi Rick & Sandy,

I am surprised no one mentioned Florida. Typically, Northern Great Lakes people have a summer place than go to FL for the warm winter weather. Were called "SnowBirds" and it's said 1000 people move to Florida a month. We like the northern FL area along the Panhandle for it's beautiful white sand beaches. Great family area, low crime, easy travel to different locations & weather your can live with year around.

I bought a place in Santa Rosa Beach (Walton County) FL (highest elevation on the whole Gulf Coast) three years ago ahead of exploding prices. Value went up 300%, yea that's right 300%. Now that's the bad part & I forgot Hurricanes. Nothing's perfect. My other suggestion is something between Northern FL & where Jake lives (comfortable 4-seasons) & close to the kids back home.

Tom
BTW
Ask Rob Watson how he likes Northern FL???

Rick,
Let's hear more about that bunk house! Any interior shots? Looks like a sweet little place.

5 acres, 440 feet of frontage on a 5800 acre lake. It's part of a chain of resoviours controled by Mn power. It's located only 42 miles from our house, so it's easy to get to in about 40 min.

Our lot is very private. The driveway is about 700 ft. long. We have a very nice gradual slope to the water. Easy to back a boat in from the shore. We thought about selling out huge money pit and building a home something like the ones on this link after the kids move out. modern stlye

But the lot is remote. It's about 10 miles of dirt road that will never have black top in my life time. I like my cars, so I could never live there year around.

So, anyway, we built this small bunk house for now, and may still build a cabin to increase the resale. Who knows... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) I was too busy to get out and keep the snow cleared from the driveway this year. Now it's too much for the truck to handle. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif)

This is a shot of the stairs going up to the loft area.

Now there is a wall behind the stairs that has a bedroom and bathroom. We installed a Bio-let toilet, (no water required.)

You might want to consider moving to Texas!!! Around south Texas, we don't have much of a winter at all. It is around 73 degrees right now, never any snow. I live to the north of Houston by Lake Conroe, about 38 miles north of downtown, just far enough away to be away from the big city and close enough to go into the city if I need to. Home prices are reasonable, and downright cheap compared to anywhere near California!!We have 914's, David Lee of of tow hook and tow bar fame lives here and others. http://www.lakeconroecvb.org Check out the Lake Conroe area.

Rick,

If you like a smaller town, try Payson, AZ. Right about a mile high. One or two snows a year that don't interfere with anything. Highs in the 90's in the summer but still nice and cool in the evenings. Plenty of pine trees and only a one hour drive from Scottsdale. I actually know a gal that commutes daily into the Valley here from Payson. It is a really great little place.

Don't move here! (Regina, Saskatchewan). We have really cold winters, and really flat, straight roads. The only plus is that it's really cheap to live here. (I think it's cause not many people want to). The summers are nice and warm, mind you.

Good luck in the search, I'm thinking somewhere warm would be mighty nice too.

It is 60 deg here today, 61 tomorrow, and it is supposed to make to 70+ by the end of the week.

Huntsville is has the fourth largest research park in the world. We are a town unlike the rest of the state. Huntsville is getting in the next 5 years 10K new jobs as a result of the BRAC. We have many major Aerospace and defense companies here in town.

Housing in this area is very valuable, but reasonably priced. Traffic is nil, Vehicle laws don't exist. With in 8 hours there are a couple dozen race tracks. 4 Hours gets you Atlanta, Nashville, KNoxville, Birmingham, Memphis, Charlotte, Chattanooga, etc. The Smokey Mountains have some of the best sceneary and hiking in the world.

No don't come here cuz I want to keep this place low profile, but..... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Denver was 70 today but may rain or snow on Wed. so you don't have to wait 3 months for the seasons to change.

Someone mentioned working in Scottsdale and commuting to Payson. Its a real nice little town but don't know values. Received our accessed valuation on a Scottsdale condo today, went up $111,000 this year. Prices are insane there.

What Brett said. I'm moving back there myself. I love florida weather but its just to flat for me. Land up on some of the mountains is still insanely cheap. This is land that requires a 4x4 to get to. My avatar is a pic of the driveway to my cabin. I dont actually own it. I just get to use it. I've seen land as low as $250/acre. Thats not a typo. Buying some land and building a cabin is on my list of things to do.
