Rick,
Sounds like a little bit of Jack Nicholson from "The Shining" talkin';
Smiley is a "hatchet:" (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smash.gif)

late winter blues and throwing unGodly amounts of wood to keep warm...
Hang tough; warmer later this week.

A positive note: You/We have most of the potable water for years to come. Sounding a bit "dry" down that way...

I'm guessing you and Sandy aren't ready to retire yet; an investment to visit in the winter or live there if your career(s) permit? Sell out the Minnesota holdings?

At similar ages and circumstances, our winter problem is not having enough warm square footage for hobbies and car stuff; drives us nuts!

Our thought is to stay; sock it away and make the "real" permanent move when the time is right and if we choose to.
Love your bunk house! Put your talents to further use and build a bigger one!
Good Luck!
Rich B

The NE corner of CA is pretty close to empty, and as long as you pick a plot that's not too high up (under 1500ft), you'll never see snow, except on the horizon.

The really desirable places, like Santa Barbara, are hugely expensive, but paradise *should* cost extra. Other places are out of control just because the local economy is hot (SF Bay Area).

North East California IS empty I remember reading that the popualation is less that the Sahara dessert. I think it's a great place - lots of room and no jerks, dirt cheap too. No matter what we still have smog inspection crap so stay away.

The SF bay area's economy SUCKS big time - I usually walk to lunch and in an entire huge block there is 2 bussinesses left - a bank and a strip club (guess why the bank is still next door.) Lot's of bussinesses have left because of the anti-bussiness, anti-family climate here in the grey area. San Francisco itself will go bust soon because of it's insane out of control attitudes - summer sucks in SF anyway.

Don't slam me for this but - why on earth would you live in a place so damn miserable. I have never understood this. The midwest is cold but New York state next to the lake is just insane and the bugs eat you alive in the summer. Then there is Texas where it's bloody hot all the time. I just don't get it - I would be in Texas if it wasen't so dang hot - I like Texans, I hate heat.

It is truly gorgeous in NM but if you're planning on buying there? Do it now. One of the NM governor's highest priorities is bringing in Film & TV production from Cali. I write for a TV show called WILDFIRE that shoots in Rio Rancho. It's beautiful there. But make no mistake. Us "Hollywood People" are coming. And buying. And the prices are going up.

Not me. I have all that rustic NM stuff living here in Topanga Canyon, CA. Fifteen minutes from the Pacific. Ninety minutes from Willow Springs Raceway. AWESOME canyon carving for my Porsche. Horse trails for my wife and daughter. Not Eden. But pretty damn close. Hope you find yours. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif)

Lots of great stuff here. I would like to visit all the places listed. Who knows... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) We'd probably have to sell our big white elephant, (have you seen the movie the money pit?) and the lake place and down size. then we'd have the jack to get a winter place.

Luv Vegas, but you ar right... a bit expensive. Look in Logandale which is about 45 minutes north of Vegas right on Lake Mead - Beautiful

or Searchlight NV Talk about rural... bet there is great deals there.

Realtor.com will give you some idea of what prices are anywhere in the US. Looks like Logandale is in the $250-350K range for single-family houses.

Holy Shit, 250-350K would get you a 2800-3200 square foot house in town here. And we don't have to worry about running out of drinking water.

Huntsville is, indeed, very cheap. Lots of places for under $100K, with $150K getting you a pretty nice place.

My working class house in St. Louis is now $140K. I sold it for $70K in 1994.

Another toy to look at prices is Zillow, though the data on Huntsville is pretty sparse.

Look at the 94403 zip code and you'll see why most people say they can't afford California. The houses near 101 and 92 are all "normal" houses, btw. 1100-2000 sq ft on land just a bit bigger than the house. And "normal" people live in them. Most of my neighbors are electricians, plumbers, and other people in the trades. This is why $100/hour is a typical labor rate here.

Damn PugBug, that brings a tear to my eye. If I squint hard I can convince myself that I can see my old townhouse right there above the graving dock.

Bleyseng - Too damned cold? Its all relative man, from where I'm hunkered down Victoria looks pretty nice right now. Smug buggers are probably counting the flowers in their back yards just to infuriate us real Canadians!

Rick - stroke Ontario off your list (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

Haven't seen anyone mention NORTHERN Nevada yet.

Good thing, we like it here. Fernley, NV is the fastest growing town in NV right now, so you're a bit late there. I live in Lovelock - great deals still, maybe get yourself a few acres with a shop....and help me with my L-Jet stuff I don't understand.....

Sounds like you miss the place SWL. I have lots of photos in and around Victoria. Here is another notice the palm tree in the center.

Check out my web site. http://www.freewebs.com/bugpug/
