I am looking at a 63 ford van to use as a "driving billboard" if you will. It has the "3 on the tree" shifter. Has anyone ever driven one? and Is it hard to do? I do not plan to autocross or use it at the drags. I just plain to drive it to the local shows and the occasional sunday drive. Thanks for any input! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) Buddy of mine still has an old Ford truck with 3 on the tree. Sort of a PITA. For something like that, I would rather just have an AT. |

Thanks guys. I figure the wife can't drive a stick which leaves my 914's out. I figure a 3 on the tree will have the same result! I learned to drive stick shift on my dad's Ford Econoline with 3 on the tree.
Fun! No more difficult than a regular shifter. |

A friend of mine once had an old Saab 96 I think it was. Had a ford V-4, with 4 on the tree. And... a freewheel clutch. Was the oddest combination of driveline components I've ever experienced. The freewheel was the weirdest...

I first learned to drive a stick with an old Ford truck with 3 on the tree. This was back in the early 70s. My dad insisted that I learned to operate a manual shift...thanks, Dad! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif)
Once I got the hang of the clutch, the shifter was no problem. It's still an H pattern, just sideways. IIRC first was in towards the driver and down, then for 2nd you pushed forward and up. Worked great! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif) |

Anybody ever seen one converted to move the shifter to the left side of the column? Cool mod if you've seen it. Guys did that so they could drive with their arm around their girl (shift with left hand).

Your left leg will get a work out. Drove a Chevy step van with it in it.
[QUOTE]ok, please excuse my ignorance ... but what's "3-on-tree" or "4 on the tree" ... refers to the gear shift being on the steering coloum(sp) vs floor mounted |

Like racergreg said, it's an H-pattern, it's just on the steering column. Generally, reverse is up and towards the steering wheel, 1st is down and towards the wheel. 2nd is up and towards the floor, and 3rd is down and towards the floor. 4 spd is similar. You can figure it out. They were very common on 50's and 60's american iron. To answer the thread question, piece of cake. It's kinda fun. |

I had a 54 Chevy Pickup that had a 3 on the tree. I thought it was fun to drive. Its really convenient to have the shifter next to the steering wheel.
Yeah Andy, the shifter is located like a good old American column shifter for an automatic trans, but its a manual with a clutch and all. |

Make sure the shifter isn't sloppy. They are a pain to rebuild but are cool while they last. My dad had a pinto he converted to floor shift and a pickup he did the same to when the 3 on the tree shifter wore out. Like everyone said its not hard. I've driven a Chevy with it and got it pretty quickly.

You can buy a shifter to convert it to a a floor shift if you want to.
