I think the 710's got a bad rap when they first appeared on the market. The "cap" on the tire would seperate, and the tire would chunk if the tire wasnt broken in well.

Broken in means not so much heat cycling.. but tread depth in this case. The 710s come shaved now ( i think) and seem to work well..though Im not sure how they survive heavy cars like a 996 or 993..

FWIW on my car I have 225 & 245's push is negligable, and the car rotates with loud pedal application nicely.. I may have just hit a sweet spot in the chassis set up, but I wouldnt worry about having narrower rubber up front

It'll be a fun season of tire testing for me.

Thanks for your replies ( even MattR's ) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)

Here's what they look like now.
The wear dimples and bars are clearly still visable.

My experience with Hoosiers is they are worn out long before they look worn out. Those Yokos look like they'd make better planters than track tires.

That was from when Trekkor was "testing" his Porterfield pads. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

Here is a quick pic of what I got today.
Set of Kumho Vics.

They are only slightly used. All 4 still have the wear dimples in clear view.

Price was right (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

I have the same Victoracers on my car although mine are a wee bit wider - couldnt beat the price as well. They dont stick as well in AX as the Hoosiers or 710s, but from everyone I have spoken to they last and last and still stick well on the track once they are warm.

I am however considering 710's for my car as well once I wear through the Victoracers.

Trekkor, I'm a driver who still buys whatever is on sale but I'll add my dos pesos. In the bicycle world of racing Tubulars are still the rage because of the high PSI you can run. High PSI (180-200) is great for less rolling resistance but bad for traction because of the stiffer sidewall flex (or lack of). Not as you would expect (side to side) but up and down (like a damper). In other words, maybe MattR was referring to sidewall flex in this light. Another example of sidewall flex is the Michelin Airless tire photos, notice the up and down flex and not the side to side. Bike racers may say I'm wrong and auto racers may say this doesn't apply.....

QUOTE (trekkor @ Apr 4 2006, 05:12 PM)
What were your findings on the Yokohama A048's for track use?

Anybody else know?

Thanks,

KT

Are they a newer generation from the A032R's?

I know a friend that runs a lightweight 912 on the track and does extremely well with the A032R's. Seems like both come in soft and softer compounds?

Just touching on some of the discourse in this thread...

I can definitely attest that the 710's are a really great performing AX tire. Mega grip. And they can serve it up stone cold or very warm. They're simply a great AX tire. Bar none.

I have no experience with them hot. I've "heard" they lose grip when they get hot at the track. Evidently Trekkor, you can run with them and keep them below that threshold. Have you considered just running slicks?

I think Victoracers are a great tire - however I found V700's to loose their competitive grip by seasons end. They may still have useful tread and they will still offer up some advantage over most street tires and provide some fun, but alas, the magic is gone and the honeymoon is over. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif)

I'm surprised everyone is getting 225's on 16X7's in their front fender. I tried a 225/50 today and it did fit in the fender well, but I could only turn the tire 1/3 before it would catch on the fender well at 9:00 & 1:30.

Maby cause I'm only running -1.3 camber. Or maby it's just the disparity in fender clearance from one car to another?

Probably just the cheap tire on the nice fuch. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

A048s are the tire that will eventually replace the A032Rs

I guess that is why the tirerack has A032Rs on closeout.

I appreciate MattR's comments.
His experience is valued here. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/clap56.gif)

These 710's are still a new tire and a lot is to be learned about them.
I think the true test will be in the heat of the summer about 15 minutes into a session.

The 048's are not new, but they just recently became available in sizes other than 17's and 18's.

Here's my private tire rack.

710's on the left, Hoosiers in the middle and the Yok's on the right.

Look how much taller the Yok's are. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/drooley.gif)

Those A032's that I flat spotted are a result of a 1 hour "fun run" session at Marina last year.

I put them on in place of the Hossier a/x tires and manage to get within 1/2 of a second of them.

I saw the cords when I got up on the trailer. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

Anyone try Hankook Ventus Z214. They come in three compounds too.

I saw a spec Miata race at Sears last year.
They all had Hankook's instead of Toyo's.
