So, ever since the ticket fairy visit on wednesday, I've been in a serious rush to get der audi wagon registered into my name.

Way too many hurdles.

Skline and I went to the DMV on weds. Appearantly the dealership which sold the car to him did not have the pink slip or a release of liability from the previous owners. So now I'm on a goose chase to get this thing transferred into my name. This is the order in which the car has been passed:

Previous Owners -> Dealership -> Skline -> Me.

I'm going to try to get from the previous owners any documentation I can. What should I ask for to make this transaction a little easier? Once already the DMV has asked for the pink slip (we cannot get it), and a bill of sale (I have 3, one from the POs, one from the dealership, one from Skline).

This is frustrating... I've got paperwork going in circles here and I need an idea on how to straighten it out.

Thanks,

~B

If the PO gave the title to the dealer, the dealer is on the hook for it. If not, they should have applied for it. If not, yell and scream, threaten them with ratting tham out to the regulatory guy at their local DMV. Lotta little dealers are more than a little lax, if not dishonest, with the DMV paperwork. The DMV will have a record of what's happened with the paperwork and any pending action. They will tell you if you ask nicely. Like, "Hi! I seem to have a problem here. Can you help me get it worked out? Works like a charm. Have your ducks in a row as best you can, be honest, and ASK, don't "tell" them what you need. The Cap'n, BTDT x a whole buncha times.

Make the dealer deal with it....best to keep Skline out the question when talking to DMV....they will want transfer fees for each transaction.

Stay away from DMV, go to AAA. I've done 3 paperless title transfers there, and it's really no sweat.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Take all your paperwork to AAA. DMV tries to make it difficult.

You MAY need to get a 'Lost Instrument Bond', $100 IIRC in case the previous owner shows up with the pink 5 years from now (see #4 thread).

Do you have to be a AAA member to register a car that way? How about AA?

Thank you guys (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Claytonavich, I'll be giving you a call once I have more paperwork in hand. I spoke to the PO's and I'm driving back down to Costa Mesa (3rd time this week? 4th?) tomorrow to get all the documentation they might have left. The first place I went thursday to attempt this fiasco'd transaction was the DMV services at AAA. Clerk looked through everything and said we don't have what we need (title).

I do want to avoid as many transfer fees as possible. For financial reasons. At the very least I'll get a 30-day temporary operation permit. And worst-case scenario my shop-owner friends can do it through a lien-sale. I've bought one car from him in the past like that and the DMV acknowledged it without a title. Problem there is the 30-day no-driving-the-vehicle wait :\
