from the 'for what it's worth' department...
ALL my cars that weren't repainted had the black paint. this includes my '73 I bought from the original owner in '82 and an original 1970 six that was sitting (tensioner failure) since '79.
also included is a bunch of parts cars that I have disassembled throughout the years..

one thing I have noticed, if you look closely, it looks like it was brushed on! there are definite brush marks on most of them! I expect, during manufacture, this was done when the engine lid was installed. in fact, on a couple cars, there was paint drips that went down the bracket..
