I gotta tell you Karl, my heart breaks for you and your family when Hunter gets sick. I just don't know what else to say.

You and yours are in our prayers.

Hunter had a little better evening after dinner. He is fighting an infection or something has evidenced by his high fever. The docs are trying to nail it down. It might be a fungal infection. His bowel sounds are starting to come back too (a good sign).

He was taken off the ventilator yesterday and is managing to stay off. (As long as he keeps his numbers up!)

I swear, spending all this time in the ICU really sucks. Several kids have passed away... another is expected to this evening. The entire family and the family's priest is in the room next to ours. It's very depresssing. I don't know how the nurses can work in that environment constantly.

Thank you for the thoughts.

My sister works in the Critical Care Unit at a hospital here in Indianapolis. I think she's in the adult unit, not the neo-natal unit. But still, I don't think I could deal with things like that.

May God bless all such care-givers for where would we be without them, and may He bless Hunter and his fine loving family.

Hi Everyone,

Hunter has been doing a little better this weekend. We had a big scare Saturday night, during which we determined Hunter was allergic to morphine. Some quick detective work on my part and persistance in bugging the physicians and nurses probably put a stop to what could have been a very tragic night. After they finally listened to what I was saying and after Hunter was given some benadryl, things turned around.

Today, he was placed back on a very small amount of food in his j-tube to begin getting his system used to formula again. So far so good. They only have him on 1/10 of his normal rate, but we have to start somewhere. His fever has been better under control, but still occasionally spikes up. His breathing is better, but they still have him on some assistance via bi-pap.

His infection at his operative site is still present, and they are aggressively treating it to keep everything in check.

Hopefully an end is approaching and Hunter can think about coming home later this week.

Thanks everyone for your help, support, kind thoughts, and understanding.

Sincerely,

Karl, Susan, and Hunter Ellzey

Karl,

I've no idea how you keep up on so many angles on things. And I'm glad to see you can push with the direct care folk when necessary. (that's something I've found hard to do in the past, but it is *so* necessary at times) Hopefully, this bump is done and you and Hunter can head home. We all think of you.

kim.
