The second article is the same car, with a twin turbo + intercooler. This time, it's from Feb 1984 of VW&Porsche.

The MSDS car was sitting next to Richard Clewitts car at the German Autofest. It has been "slightly" modified now. See European car and Excellence for the latest articles.

LOL, the flat fan setup alone cost more than a lot of our 914's...

(IMG:http://www.nosubstitute.org/events/Autofest13Sept03/DSCN0052.jpg)

Personally I kind of like Richard's car "better". It has more of a sleeper quality to it, and is also actually driven on the track. The rear flares are pretty cool -- nice metal work. I dunno if the MSDS car sees any real use these days, or is more of a garage queen / curiousity???

Cool pics.

On the msds car, what is the path of the airflow through the intercooler? Is it just sort of back though the engine compartment?

Yeh, the fan set up is cool. Do you think it is necessary? (i.e. there is definitely a wow factor for having it...)

Kim,

Thank you for the articles. Nice to see I'm won't be the first person down this road. I have contacted Richards firm to get in touch with him regarding 930ing a 914. Thanks again for the contact info.

Chris, thanks for the photos and info.

If anybody has contact info on having the 930 box machined for a mid engine placement I would be thankful.

The PO of my car also had a V8 (Chevy 350) 914 -- extremely nice -- with a cable shifted 930 trans. He said the donor trans, mid-engine conversion and shift setup cost almost $7K but I did not ask who did the work. He was local (SF Valley) and I may still have his email around somewhere.

Man, it's funny.

I'm sure Brad started a thread on his "930 tranny in a 914" work, but I can't find it using the search facility.

Brad has done this before. Ping him. He knows the bits of the conversion.

How's about another tranny inquiry....Will a 915 box with the Wevo mid engine conversion be able to handle the output of the 930 motor?

The reason I ask is I'm wondering is it more cost efficient to sell the 4 speed 930 box, pick up a 915 and mount the $1800 Wevo conversion to a 915 box rather than having the 930 4 speed machined down, flip R&P, etc. Ideas people??

By the way Tim the 914 photos looked quite wicked. Very nice.

It is common for 930 owners to put a 915 box in to get 5 speeds rather than 4, and that is in a heavier car. Unless you plan to really modify the 930 engine, I think that would be the way to go.

WEVO has a lot of experience with 915s (they offer a modified trans case for them also) so you should probably talk to Hayden at WEVO and see what he thinks about it.

I was under the impression that Renegade does do a complete 930 ring gear flip, maybe thats just for the v8 conversion. Are they in house or is someone else actually doing the machining???

Renegade outsources its gearbox work.

A call to Wevo will be placed re: their opinions on the 915 mated to a 930. I was also curious regarding the efficiencies of the 915 gear ratios for a 930 motor...any opinions?

Well, closer gears mean it is easier to stay on boost, which is why it is a popular 930 upgrade.

You probably want a later 915 for the taller ring and pinion and the stronger aluminum case.

I love it when its NOT ME answering Renegade questions. Keeps my ass out of a sling.

The 915 is the way to fly. I thought it over and unless you end up with 600hp out of the 930 engine.. the 915 will last behind 400lb feet of torque and 500hp. Plus as James stated.. the ratios are nice for a turbo engine.
