]I am cleaning up my 1971's engine while it is out for head repair, and am looking for some new decals for the top of the engine as shown below. Any sources? John, Good luck! I haven't seen any in years! You may want to check with Jeff Bowlsby of this forum, but I doubt there are any new ones around. Had a discussion a month ago with a guy on eBay who claimed to have "original 914 stickers", but they were in copper foil & for 914-6's (though he disagreed with me). I seriously doubt they were "original" & defintiely NOT for a 4 cylinder. Let us know if you come up with a source - even aftermarket, there is money to be made there. Pat |

John -
Any sign shop can make them for you, and the prices continue to get cheaper as the computer technology improves. I just had the below decals made for an old school bike restoration - they are perfect. The black head tube decal is black over prizm gold foil - they had the foil in a ton of colors, obvoiusly plain silver was one of them - both in a brushed and shiny finish. All the lines are very crisp. The entire sheet ran me 42.00. They should be able to get them nearly perfect. Attached image(s) |

Here is another example - the old sticker is from 1976. I just had the new one done. They matched the font perfectly - too bad my measurement on the oval were wrong!

Last I checked, AA had some of the valve clearance labels. I do not know if they are original or repros.
I have never seen any source for the timing labels. Here is a link to my labels webpage. http://members.rennlist.com/914_collectibles/PLM.htm |

I wish I knew what the engine tin numbers meant. I have added your numbers to my labels webpage. Does any one have the size (or font) of these numbers? I'd like to make a stamp to reproduce these for my engine tin after I powder coat them. (Mine tin was blasted off and then the tin was just painted. No more numbers). |

Mike, Went to the "old guru" of 914 info about this. He's completely done with Porsche & racing airplanes these days (the small ones), but gave me the "lowe" down & said I should go to the VW 411/412 site for this info. Tried, but my PC blew it's guts again (new Dell on the way). Someone else please try - I'm living on borrowed time with this 6 year old Gateway! We NEED this info. First one to get it gets a free early rain tray with a crack in it - I'll pay the shipping!! Pat |

I took Pat's advise and did a search. found "M" codes for type 4 vw's. Note M26 is a code for the activated charcoal filter. Perhaps the 26 referenced in my M26/55? Coincidence? Although M157 seems a better fit. Any M157's out there?
M Codes . 'M' Code Optional Extras for the Type 4 Volkswagen maintained a list of options that were available when a new car was built. The codes were options or standard equipment in certain markets. These codes were called 'M' Codes. This collection was taken from a dealer parts manual I have that dates to about 1974, but before production ended. If you notice that I am missing some information, please feel free to email me. on his site Ratwell says the stamps are the date and engine production number so..
maybe M26 is March 26 56 is the engine number for that day IO stands for In Order (in German) as its a quality control stamp. |

Assuming a date is indicated, 'M" could be Marz(March) or Mai(May). Seems a bit ambiguous for the teutonic mind set. But does it make sense to date an assembly in such an obvious manner? And in a non-conventional way(usually a 3 would indicate March.) In the factory where type 4 engines were made, indicating obviously and somewhat temporarily (the paint applied quickly and lightly) world wide vs USA bound (non-emmision controlled or carbed vs fi, for example) going into location specific cars seems useful. The '022.6' we find on our 914's could indicate fi, or even 914 vs 411's.

I have seen only one picture of the VW engine assembly line (don't have it) and it was a huge engine assembly line. Some sort of coding was needed and VW did engines in batches soooo Thursday was 914 2.0l day etc......

If John has a '71 w/022.6 stamped on the engine tin and I have a '70 w/022.6 stamped on the tin as well, could that number signify the assembly line that the engine traveled down on its way to be mated to the chassis? I've got to think that those numbers were applied before the engine was raised/chassis lowered to mate them together. I'd be inclined to believe that the Karmann Osnabruck plant applied those numbers.

OK, I stand before you TOTALLY confused as to the engine shroud stamping! Someone explain, in simple terms for an aged person, what this means. I must be missing somehting here, because the listing provided does not meet my remeberance for the code in my tin. Could be wrong, but my coding was a simple 3 digit code, with no "dot" anything. I have a set of tins I'm about to restore & would love to have the right code so a stamp can be made, but you really early guys have this funky xxx.x scheme - mine had no .x, thought I am certain it was 6xx. Was really hoping to get clarification from the "old Master", but he didn't know either. Am I making too much of this? |

Pat, you can see the progression of these engien tin numbers on my webpage if you have not reviewed them yet. The secret decoder ring has not surfaced though...The M-numbers listed above are a different animal for the factory optional equipment codes re: a vehicles build specification. I have most of those on my webpage too.

Let me state the obvious here; because we are working with incomplete data, drawing conclusions from one or a few cars is tricky at best. Let's take "022.6". So far, we have it on early engines (W codes), in '70 and '71. Do we have it on any late engines? Do we have it on any non USA delivery cars? Is it on VW type 4 cars? Conversely, do we know of any'70 and '71 USA delivery 914's where it is absolutely absent from day one? Let's then say that we answer the above questions and determine that it was found only on US bound 914's in W series engines with fuel injection. Then we could draw the conclusion that it probably should be on all those early engines in 914's, and the code means whatever made those engines different from other type 4 engines.

there are available some of those decals from a bus site as I have a set. Some match the 914 ones. I'll take a pic of them.
