This is on ebay and from the way he describes the shift knob pattern its not a regular five speed. so is it a sportmatic or is he just confused. I wish it was closer so i could check it out.

Those are the letters/numbers on a sportomatic shift knob. Possibly the knob was changed or it is a very rare car with a sporto. Pictures are too poor to see if there is a clutch pedal. Worth asking the seller (In fact, I think I will).

It's a true european 914, does that mean that the rest of them were made

in Pacoima?

How many did they make with the sport-o-matic?

no - that just means that it has more power than the US-model (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

there are no confirmed production numbers for sportos - the most likely number is "about 25" ... maybe including two 914-4 sportos (WARNING - that's all just rumor)

The ad does indicate a sporto shift knob. However, everything else indicates a standard 914/4 2.0. I don't believe any production 914/4 got a sporto, at least as late as 1973. Not to say that this was not converted to a sporto.
My money is on a, quickly changed, shift knob.

Ah, so the tranny wasn't a true automatic, it was an auto-stick similar to the Bug, right?

sportos had a vacuum operated clutch that engaged at the slightest movement of the shift lever...my bets as well that its just a shift knob change..

Do sporto setups have a clutch pedal at all? If you look at the shot in the ad that shows the shift knob, you can just see the edge of the cutout in the carpet for the clutch pedal - though you can't see the pedal. So, either he's got a carpet set with an empty clutch cutout and a sporto tranny, or it's a swapped knob on a manual tranny setup.

Had my 914 in for service in early '74 at Classic P/A (Cincinnati), which changed to Moser P/A, & is now Beechmont Porsche. There was an irish green 914/6 Sporto in for service (owner not present). Car appeared to be a Euro vehicle, since it had all the proper markings & no side markers. Service guy told me it belonged to a retired Army fellow, who had retired to the Cincy area. Never saw or heard of it again, but it WAS a Sporto.

Shortly after, I bought a '70 Sporto 911E. It was a great car around town & lots of fun to auto-x on tight/short courses - you could concentrate on steering & power, without concerning yourself with lots of shift input. Problem was getting used to NOT resting your fingers on the shifter, which caused a microswitch to disengage the clutch. Lots of fun though. One of those cars I'd like to have back.

Fellow that bought it from be blew it up in 2 months (they occasionaly need oil). Sat on a mechanics lot for 2 years before it went to auction for storage fees. Too bad - it was a pretty sweat car. Tangerine too, my third favorite color.

I believe that Panorama had an article by Kerry Morse that listed 25 914-6 Sportos by VIN. There were 4 in model year 1970, and 21 in model year 1971, if I recall correctly.
