Another option is to use a fuel filler funnel like Martin Arnaud did...

On surface mount installation the fuel doors are flat the hood is not so a rubber gasket of some sort would help, also if mounting one on the surface of the hood a good bump to the door when it's open could possibly make a dent. This was the main reason I recessed mine.
