My 914 seat belt retractors don't work very well. I'd like to keep the retractable function. Does anyone repair the retractors? The belts and the rest of the harware seem okay.

Does anyone know anything about the eBay item # 330088556824 belts?

Those look interesting. I'd like to know about these too.

I was talking to Clay the other day about seat belts and he said that 944 seat belts are pretty much bolt on replacement for the 914. He did say that there was a bolt or a shim that you had to cut off, but other than that, it was a direct replacement.

I replaced my seat belts with some 924 belts. They work fine.

The 944 seat belt is identical to aq 914 one with one exception. There is a big-assed pin on the 944 seat belt that sticks out the back of it. That pin has to be removed to install it in a 914.

And I know a Red water pumper that really doesn't need seat belts because it never goes very fast... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)

Anyone ever re-tension the belts? Is there any great chalenge--like can you just tighten a spring by winding it a little tighter? Isn't getting to it/getting it out half the battle?

there are several aftermarket suppliers who still have old new stock in factory 914 seatbelts at very good prices (like dave at GPR!!) I would try them before substituting or going through a big hassle. Also if you pull them out completely and then lubricate the roller base with some of the stuff that penetrates and then turns to grease you may get them to work nicely again. (of course you will have to remove the retractor assembly from the car!)

on my 1st 914 I got a set of nice belts from a 300D Mercedes, the rear belts worked nice. Made by REPA just the 914 units.
Now I just use my harnesses.


Anyone ever re-tension the belts? Is there any great chalenge--like can you just tighten a spring by winding it a little tighter? Isn't getting to it/getting it out half the battle?

I tried that with a old 74 Super Beetle. Funnest thing when that spring lets loose and goes everywhere. Like pushing a mad snake back in the bag pushing it by the tail.

I've tried retensioning. It didn't work. I'm convinced that 'lazy' seatbelts are caused by two factors:
1) corrosion/rusting of the chrome guide that sticks out the top and the top pivot/attachment guide by the coat hook. I see so many of those with peeling chrome and therefore lots of sharp edges to 'grab' the belt webbing.
2) Frayed belt webbing. there are companies out there that will put new webbing on your old belts. They even match the original stitching and sew on the old tags. Frayed webbing is a safety concern and any seat belt manufacturer will tell you that.

Here's a picture of the 944 belts with the big pin knocked off, the resulting hole tapped, and the original 914 pointy pin threaded in.

Just a word about taking them apart. It can be a little dangerous. The spring really wants to fly apart. Not too easy to put back together. I ended up tossing mine.

Yeah, don't take apart the skinny side unless you know what you're doing. It will erupt violently and dangerously and in most cases, becomes trash.

I've had the retractors out of the car but lack the courage to unwind the spring and rewind it tighter. I'll try oiling them up better, but I suspect the springs are just tired from 35 years of service, and it's time to replace.

He has them. Ask him about his friend George's new old stock of over 300 of each side that he has access to sell.
