My 914 seat belt retractors don't work very well. I'd like to keep the retractable function. Does anyone repair the retractors? The belts and the rest of the harware seem okay.
Does anyone know anything about the eBay item # 330088556824 belts?

Those look interesting. I'd like to know about these too.
I was talking to Clay the other day about seat belts and he said that 944 seat belts are pretty much bolt on replacement for the 914. He did say that there was a bolt or a shim that you had to cut off, but other than that, it was a direct replacement.

The 944 seat belt is identical to aq 914 one with one exception. There is a big-assed pin on the 944 seat belt that sticks out the back of it. That pin has to be removed to install it in a 914.
And I know a Red water pumper that really doesn't need seat belts because it never goes very fast...

Anyone ever re-tension the belts? Is there any great chalenge--like can you just tighten a spring by winding it a little tighter? Isn't getting to it/getting it out half the battle?

there are several aftermarket suppliers who still have old new stock in factory 914 seatbelts at very good prices (like dave at GPR!!) I would try them before substituting or going through a big hassle. Also if you pull them out completely and then lubricate the roller base with some of the stuff that penetrates and then turns to grease you may get them to work nicely again. (of course you will have to remove the retractor assembly from the car!)

on my 1st 914 I got a set of nice belts from a 300D Mercedes, the rear belts worked nice. Made by REPA just the 914 units.
Now I just use my harnesses.

I tried that with a old 74 Super Beetle. Funnest thing when that spring lets loose and goes everywhere. Like pushing a mad snake back in the bag pushing it by the tail.

I've tried retensioning. It didn't work. I'm convinced that 'lazy' seatbelts are caused by two factors:
1) corrosion/rusting of the chrome guide that sticks out the top and the top pivot/attachment guide by the coat hook. I see so many of those with peeling chrome and therefore lots of sharp edges to 'grab' the belt webbing.
2) Frayed belt webbing. there are companies out there that will put new webbing on your old belts. They even match the original stitching and sew on the old tags. Frayed webbing is a safety concern and any seat belt manufacturer will tell you that.
Here's a picture of the 944 belts with the big pin knocked off, the resulting hole tapped, and the original 914 pointy pin threaded in.

Just a word about taking them apart. It can be a little dangerous. The spring really wants to fly apart. Not too easy to put back together. I ended up tossing mine.
McMark
Feb 14 2007, 04:40 PM
Yeah, don't take apart the skinny side unless you know what you're doing. It will erupt violently and dangerously and in most cases, becomes trash.

I've had the retractors out of the car but lack the courage to unwind the spring and rewind it tighter. I'll try oiling them up better, but I suspect the springs are just tired from 35 years of service, and it's time to replace.
Keep those cards and letters coming.

So I've got an issue with my driver's side seat belt that sometimes I can't pull it out to buckle up. Sometimes it will pull out part way, then stop and I can ease off the tension and get it going again. Other times the thing just won't pull out at all and I have to drive a little ways before it will release. Is there a way to treat this or do you just need to replace them when they get like this?

Hi George,
Just to make it clear, I was not griping about getting quoted 285 for the seat belt. I would have paid 300 dollars for the set. I was actually thanking you for making the NOS seat belts available to the club. I don't want my old seat belt to fail me in a car accident.

So, I picked up a set of 944 seat belts for my 71 914 for free!
I've also heard the stories about fitting these seat belts on the older cars.
In my case, my car has been retro-fitted with the later style back pad and seats.
I think I can make these seat belts work with a little modification to the back pad, belt/pin and massaging the firewall.
Has anyone done this same mod to their 70-71 and do you have any pictues and or dimensions to share?
I am making the assumption that these belts are designed to be mounted on the firewall and not the floor or longs area. Am I correct?
Thanks.

I pulled a set apart a few weeks back and figured out how to tighten them. I still have the issue of them pulling out smoothly without catching. I studied it for a long time too. The release needs to be at the correct angle because the interlock works partly with gravity. I put it all back together and decided to try it again some other night.

I would be in for a set of seat belts if somebody could offer an affordable set for sale. Those belts for sale at AA look fantastic but are way out of my price range. It would be great to see one of the vendors come up with an economical kit for sale that would work in all the model of 914's even with some mildly used parts....just a thought

I hadn't realized that George's quoted Auto Atanlta price was from 2007. I just got a price quote back from AA today and in 3 years the price has doubled to $250 each.

There I fixed it,
After taking one side apart to see why it did not retract, The spiral spring popped out and parts flew every where.
I then carefully took the other side apart (the narrow cap) and carefully slid a putty knife under the cover and over the spring to see how it's supposed to look like in there.
If the retraction is getting weak, you can take the spring outer end out of it's slot and wrap several more winds around and replace the spring in the slot.
If the spring has come out you have to re-wind it in the opposite direction it got itself into starting from the outside, be patient it ain't easy.. then with the belt fully extended, insert the spring inner end into the hub slot. make sure the little SS washer is in there first between the plastic cup and the spring. If more tension is needed, use the technique above.
Here's what it should look like in there with the belt about half way out.

I also bought an NOS seatbelt from AA, after my driver side seatbelt would not retract anymore. The only small complaint I have was that that piece of metal that bolts at the top and loops the seatbelt down is chrome when mine are original black. The plastic cover does hide most of it, so it is hardly noticeable. The thing is I know it's not completely matching and I am a little anal about things.

After you have the big cover off, pull the seat belt all the way "out" until you can see the slot where the belt is fastened to the spool. Push the belt back out of the slot (kind of hard to explain), it is retained in the spool in a recess with a pin inside a pocket in the belt. Once you have pushed the belt back thru the slot a little, you can push that pin out of the pocket. Once the pin is out you can pull the belt out of the spool thru the slot. You will have to keep the spool from spinning under spring tension while doing all of this. Once the belt is out, tighten the spool tension until it wont tighten anymore. I usually back off the tension a turn, then reinsert the belt (make sure it goes back thru the slot in the same orientation so you have not reintroduced a twist into the belt), insert the pin, pull the belt pocket and pin back into the recess and let it wind back up.
Sounds way more complicated than it really is. This has improved every belt I have done it on. For the belts in the worst shape that I have worked on, I had to take them completely apart, including removing and rewinding that awful spring, but most belts don't require it.
