Back in the 70s, Bruce Anderson and Bob Garretson actually did some vibration analysis on the 914 chassis, and figured out the exact points to stiffen up the chassis, but it did involve a roll cage.

If you install both inner and outer long kits, you will be plenty stiff. I used the Mayeur kit on mine, and it's much stiffer than my original 70 914-6.
