Nobody is getting rich making and selling 914 parts. I have a few friends who are developing, manufacturing, and selling parts either as an improvement for a part that regularly fails, doesn't perform well enough, or is NLA. They do it for the money, of course, but it's not that much money. They do it because they love 914's and want to help keep them alive.
If Ed's part wasn't patented, Craig didn't break any laws and according to our legal system doesn't owe Ed anything. That doesn't make it right. If he's doing what this thread says he's doing, it's a major dickhead move for several reasons. Most have already been discussed here, but ther'es one that I'd like to bring up now. There is a finite number of people building parts for our decreasing number of cars. Craig wasting his resources to produce an exact copy of an already available part does this community no good at all. If he had used his time to develop a new solution for one of the 914's problems we'd all be better off, but instead for a few dollars he decided to rip off a guy who developed a product that he saw that we needed.
Now Ed's pissed, lots of people think Craig is a dick, and nobody is any better for it.
I would rather see something that benefits us all happen than this.

Edited:

Nice tutor in these lessons between 914 parts vendors and the behavior involving logic and the reasoning behind each one.

My 2 cents. Out market him and out sell him.

So I was planning on marketing a sway bar set that I build. It's based on the Weltmiester bar. Maybe not exactly like theirs but close. If I can build these and sell them cheaper than the catolog pricing is that wrong? How many do you think I will sell in a year? Probably not enough to make it worth getting hassled over.

Are you going to include a copy of Weltmeister's instructions with your bar?

Ed

Nay, I don't have a copy. I don't even have one of their bars. I've seen a couple of pictures and stayed at a holiday inn express once I'm sure. I'm making a simalar part. I'm probably violating someones idea someplace along the way. If I do I'm sure someone will let me know about here before I have the opportunity to work it out. If I put any anti-sway bar companies out of business I'll let you know. I'm sure I will be able to retire off this idea. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) I quit my job already in anticipation of the imense wealth I will have. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif)

Please do make sure you have all your duck in a row. Is the product exactly the

same or simular. If the product was reengineered to 'Make it better', and is, thats

America. But if it is a rip off I would like to know.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif)

I agree as well. It is one thing for Mr. Stromberg to copy and paste entire sections of someones website onto his own in order to sell a similar product. That is plagerism. But it is entirely different to sell the same product, a product that is maybe not as good but cheaper, or one that is better. That is competition.
I would walk softly on that...

This is exactly why we have the U S Patent Office. The term "patent pending" would have put a completely new light on this issue, and put the originator of the design in the catbird seat!

I doubt that making a piston style support for a 914 would ever be patentable...I think it has to be a new item, not just a new "application"....but since I've never stayed at a Holliday Inn...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I am pretty sure a new application is patentable, but I have seen trunks and hoods and lift gates being held up by piston style supports before. Using one on a 914 instead of a Honduh isn't patentable I don’t think.

And patenting a new application gives you rights to that application not to the original item, so it doesn't matter any way.

So if Fred patented the pneumatic cylinder and Barney patented the cylinder to support a hood, then Barney couldn't actually sell the cylinders to support hoods without obtaining the rights from Fred. And Fred couldn't use his cylinders to support hoods without obtaining the rights from Barney.

But, if there were any money in it, before either gets their idea off the ground, Mr. Slate will come in and start marketing the pistons for CONGLOMO Inc. and then tie up Fred and Barney in court costs so they never see a dime while CONGLOMO makes millions.

This is not a comment to the subject of the thread, just a comment on if you can patent a new application and further ramblings because the original subject of the thread is RESOLVED so hijacking seems OK and I am very very tired but waiting for my report to print before I go home.

Anyone checked into the costs of a patent lately.

Done correctly the prices start at 20K... Anyone have any idea how many of the questioned components sales it would take to make the patent effective???

My DTM concept is not patented, that didn't stop me from shutting down the bastard that copied one and doing so permanently- just made it more difficult.

How long ago was this? I bought a rear trunk kit from Craig close to 8 years ago? I know I've never had a problem with Craig in any aspect. I've done quite a bit of business with him too. I'm sure he will chime in & work everything out. Let's not bury the guy before we hear his side of things. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)

It does look like this could have been resolved without going public.
Perhaps Craig didn't exercise due diligence in his research and should not have copied the original instruction document, but there appears to have been no attempt at IP theft.
I'm guessing Ed hasn't been marketing these effectively so no one really knew about that source.
