I signed up for the EVDL discussion list....hope it's a little more tolerant than the 356talk list.

Anyways, searched the archives for 914 conversions and got a pile back.....

I saw that Otmar has TWO 8 inch motors bolted together.....WTF?

I cant believe that YOU would consider modifying a 914 to produces anything but a COA concourse car with all the original parts.

How do you think this will affect the overall value of our original cars and impact my perception of reality.
The talk list is one of the most tolerant and open groups I have ever seen. Welcoming all people who love cars they cannot afford and ensuring large profits for owners of the real cars that they all bought for 3k twenty years ago.
With the hardcore members all aging and moving on due to the fact that they can no longer drive the cars anymore, the list is dying. Oh, did anyone think about a forum?? hell no, that would give free and open access to data and threads that should never be shared outside the inner circle.

Please dont consider making the car faster, safer, or god forbid driveable, that would ruin the entire point of saving these old true engineering marvels..

Mike,

Maybe you can buy a converted car and transfer the components. Here's some for sale:

What about capacitors with batteries? Read something recently about manufactures using capacitors with batteries that provide the electricity you need as you push the pedal down without causing serious drainage problems with the batteries, thereby reducing the replacement battery issue.

How feasible is it to use photovoltaic "charging stations" at work in the parking lot. How expensive are they and can they give you a charge you need during business hours?

Seems to me that if you can get the charge for free and get about 40mpc (miles per charge) then hooking up some sort of rear wheel drive electric system to a diesel vw bug would really kick some serious ass in opec!

O.k. Tell me why I am a dreamer?

A capacitor is just a way of leveling the demand curve. When the demand is low it charges up from the batteries. When demand is high it releases that energy instead of the batteries having to do all the work. It doesn't create energy of course - just a storage technique. I could understand a theory that says avoiding demand spikes is good for the battery. Where I'm a little skeptical is in a capacitor that was big enough to make a difference for any more than a fraction of a second.

Google for supercapacitors or ultracapacitors.

Just sold a tub to a guy in Aurora for an electric conversion. It will be his second. Gave him info about this site but have not heard from him since. He is suppose to contact us about an interior and some other parts. Will tell him about this thread if he ever calls back.

Well the current 914 is too nice to convert...gonna keep it as a gas burner for awhile until I tire of it....still trying to get the Miata guy down on his price.

He wants 7500 and it needs all new batteries....
