Never done anything much longer than 350-400 miles in one day or sitting. But my current 914 I wouldn't hesitate driving 1000+ miles in one lump. It's become a well sorted car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

How far have you driven your 914 on a trip?

~2000 miles roundtrip to the RRC in moab last year. the car was packed with luggage, spare parts and my GF and me.
no major problems, only some minor trouble with the fuelpump, which turned out to be a kinked fuelline ...

it was surprisingly comfortable!

I drove the Bumblebee Racer home to Sacramento from Portland at WCR 2006. I would have to guess at 600+ miles??? I have driven the Silver car about 200 miles in one day. Make it 200 + because it was about 100 miles to the autocross, then I autocrossed then drove it home...

It seems to me I have had more reliability problems right around home. Been towed home twice with my USAA Roadside Assistance. Once for a little fire when *someone named asshat* (not me) set my timing so advanced I burned up my starter wiring. Once when my coil rotated and shorted on the tin.

In its current state with the 2270 I would not hesitate to drive my silver 914 anywhere. Just that reliable...

San Jose to San Diego, S.D. to Denver, numerous drives 200+ there, Denver to Seattle via Moab, Seattle to Portland, drive and drive back same day. The last time I checked, the silver car was still making 200+ mile round trips around the sound. I will ask. Current car is still being sorted out. The most I have done so far is 80 miles in one day. (still breaking in motor).. I wouldn't hesitate to take a well sorted out 914 cross country. I never got lonely as about every 10th person I passed waived and gave me thumbs up. recently, i put on over 400 miles

yucaipa, to san clemente, then on the way back, stuck in trafficm diverted to la, more traffic then came back

next day, yucaipa to riverside, to la, and then back

but the car has gone from des moines to so cal, and i think its gone across country a few other times, but i would have to ask my mom to be positive about that

and in traffic, and such, other cars tend to be better, and much more trouble free

(though as a weekend car, the 914 is perfect (drive it enough to enjoy it, without every problem becoming overwhelming))

I drove my first 914 from SF, CA to Houston, TX and back 2000 miles, summer after highschool graduation. I was with my 18 year old girlfriend, now 18 years later still wife:)

We did the Southbound direction in 3 days and took I5 to I40. Coming back we took 10 and then drove up Hwy 1. We loved it.

After that, I did 1300 miles in a weekend to go from LA to San Luis Obispo to pick up my friend and then to Phoenix for the last USA F1 race before the return to Indy. I averaged 85mph and 30+ mpg that round-trip.

I went back and forth LA to SF, 400 miles each way, at least a dozen times in 3 years. Usually 101, sometimes I5.

That car was a 2.0 I rebuilt myself with 8:1 euro mahle's and stock d-jet. I used new injectors, CHT, and all new vacuum hoses. The car was dead-reliable, except for a loose trans ground strap that gave me a starting issue. I was in high-school and the internet wasn't there for me. I had haynes and the rebuild your aircooled vw book. "Back when I was a kid, we had to walk 10 miles to school uphill... both directions!"

If it's running good, I'll drive a 914 anywhere still. The car I just bought has 333,000 documented miles. I want get it to 500,000 before we all run out of gas:) I smell a road trip!

cheers,
dug

Over 2000 miles for one trip (Porltand, OR to San Diego, CA & back) with my wife shortly after we were married.

...all on 101 and 1 down (got stopped by a landslide just after crossing the boarder) and I5 (with side trips) back up.

Amazing how much stuff fits in the trunks.

Drove from Berkeley down to San Diego for the parade, then back. No trouble of course. The car with no carpets or sound deadening did get a bit old after a while though.

First 914 went all over; Fullerton CA to Breckinridge CO and back, Fullerton to Roswell NM and back, Fullerton to Yosemite Valley and back, Fullerton to Seattle and back, etc. Then again, it was a new car and expected to go the distance.

Next one, a bumblebee, did a round trip from Seattle to Fullerton, including an adventure in the Siskiyous where I couldn't buy chains because my Pirelli P6s were too close to the wheel arch. CHP turned me around at the CA/OR border so I had to detour thru Redding to Grants Pass OR by way of Eureka CA through roadblocks, drifting snow in the passes and mudslides on the way back down to the coast. Hairiest day ever.

My current '74 2.0 was bought in Buena Park CA and driven up the coast to Seattle. Two years later it's a daily driver and I'd drive it anywhere.

Better go down to the garage now and polish up the jackstands.

Used to drive up to see my girlfriend at school every weekend. 250 mile round trip plus about another 130 or so miles per week (daily driver). Did that for six months straight before she moved back locally. Only maintenance needed, valve adjustment and oil changes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I wouldn't hesitate to drive it from Seattle to Orlando and back. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

God I (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) this car!!

1985 while in college at University of Florida I made the trip from Gainesville, FL to Montreal, CA. and back. What a blast. Top down most of the way. Picked up one of by best friends in DC along the way. The car drove fantastic. Got to Montreal and had to replace oil cooler seals...a little pain... but, all was well for the return trip! The car is a 75 2.0 that is now in process of getting a six. I am the second owner and purchased the car in 1983.

1660 miles when I moved from Minneapolis, MN to Las Vegas, NV in a bone stock unrestored field fresh 914, with all of my worldly possesions packed in around me. My starter overheated halfway through Utah so I couldn't turn the car off, other than that I made it with no trouble. It was a great adventure!
