Andy nd others that have done it.
what is a budget to set aside for a 3.6 liter conversion? Robust, built up tranny, axles that last etc etc. I would prefer to go with the EFI, but if I can make it work with carbs it would look cool... Rich |

A 915 trans will do a better job than a 901....but it's STILL a weak link. I tanked mine after about 20K miles. Also a WEVO cable shift is best.....

$1000 just to think about it
Another $1000 to reconsider Another $1000 to decide it's a go Then you get into the real money. All the rest run at $3-5000 intervals (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) I have no idea! Just haven't had much time to be a smart ass today (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) It will definately be spendy & depending on your level of expertise? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) The more you have to pay to have work done the price gets astronomical (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif) |

Holy Cow Andy!!!
I think I'll definitely stick with my 3.0 conversion now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Did you convert your car from a 4-cylinder? Do you need the single belt pulley? Can you run a 3.6 with 1 5/8" headers? |

Holy Cow Andy!!! > Did you convert your car from a 4-cylinder? - YES > Do you need the single belt pulley? - NO, but the stock pulley would just be dead weight as i don't run anything off it besides the alternator > Can you run a 3.6 with 1 5/8" headers? - YES, but you might lose some higher rpm power i never said my list is a MUST for a 3.6L engine. you sure can use different parts, less quality parts, smaller parts, cheaper parts, used parts or anything else you can come up with. i simply listed what *i* used for my conversion. the price was actually closer to $20k as i did some additional work "while i was in there" that was not directly related to the bigger motor. but if you're converting from a /4 car, you may also want to consider bigger/better brakes and updated suspension, which will set you back another few grand ... and then you might be inclined to make it look nice too. and stiffen the chassis a bit. maybe a long kit or even a rollcage. and then ... That is less than I expected. You can do a decent Raby four for less than this, but if you want a lot of power I suspect you will be looking at a similar bill - especially when you factor in the SDS, tangerine system, etc. Cheers, Steve |

Andy's bill of materials looks pretty good. I added up everything that I could think of in about 5 minutes one time and it was somewhere around $20k. Once I got to that point, I put the pencil down and decided I didn't really want to know anymore.
I also have a 901, so that's a little cheaper at this point. As long as it holds together. Keep the stock fuel injection unless you are going to bigger cams, etc. I get about 26 mpg on average. Try that with carbs. |

Mixed highway/street? yes. i get about 24 mpg with a lot of "spirited driving" ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) i get close to 30 mpg on long trips like the 2000 mile run to moab last year ... That's looks pretty accurate according to my list. I did a 915 Wevo conversion that approached 10K with cost of tranny/conversion/gate shift/limited slip/bearing retainer/etc...
So I guess that brings me up to about $30K........ouch!! |

That includes very spirited driving. I think the worst I've seen is 18 mpg, but that included an autocross school where all I did was beat on it all day. I do check it every time I fill up, just for curiosity.
I do have an H for fifth, so that should help on the highway. That's why I decided to stick with the 901. At least for now. Clay is talking about using a G-50 for his mythical 4-liter. I would like to do that if it works out. |

Almost forgot your other question. I'm using the stock 4-cyl CVs and axles at this point. I'd prefer they break before the tranny. I may upgrade later, dunno.
