In theory, yes. However, you should set it as you reassemble to make sure it's right. If you had work on the heads, like flycutting, you're changing the geometry from what it was before and you need to go through the exercise or resetting it.

Just a valve job, new valves and guides. Geometry should be the same according to the guy at EMW in hawthorn. I know the pushrods must go back in the same way they came out, just wondering if the lifters must stay matched with the pushrods? What do you mean set the geometry as I reassemble anyway? If I use all the same components, less valves; what changes the geometry? No added shims and not going 911 swivelfeet. |

The Lifters MUST go back in the same hole they came out of, each lifter is broke in to each corresponding cam lobe, putting them back in the wrong hole could and has caused cam's to go flat.
As for the push rods, if their the stock aluminum ones, they are the same length, and can be replaced in any location. I thought it was funny when you said, you reconize people's names on boxes & parts when ever you come in. And I asked Jorge yours, and I thought I reconized it... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) Interesting about the lifters & pushrods, my Chilton and Clymer manuals say to pay attention to pushrod location but nothing about the lifters. All will go back where they came out then. Ha! This car community is pretty well connected I guess. Everybody seems to know the same suppliers/vendors. Whether I'm at EMW or Al Reed's, nice to see familiar names & faces. |

This is why I just tag and note the location of everything when I'm tearing down an engine. Doesn't matter if it's a complete rebuild or if I'm just replacing a specific part. Because when it comes to projects like this where you're going to have shop work done and there's going to be a time gap between disassembly and reassembly, the chances of remembering every little detail are not good. Unless you have a pornographic... erm, photographic memory. Then you're probably okay.
But on the note of lifters- aren't the 4 center lifters different than the outer 4? I mean, don't they rotate as the cam lifts them? That's what my shop guy told me when I took the cam in for him to have a look at. The two center lobes had a different wear pattern than the outer two, and I was told that's why. |
