I say dump it, right now, and for cheap. It's a bad car, bad. It's really old, so old it's not even listed in Kelly Blue Book any more. It doesn't have an automatic, power steering or power brakes, and never will. And it makes lots of smog. Bad car.

So how much do you want for it?

Midtowner, I just did a new "Lambo" thread, with your thread in mind, check it out.

Yes, I saw your thread and was wondering if you were referring to this discussion. Thanks!
Erik, The point I was making when referring to you was that you have a unique car, even more so than a Lambo, And if you get rid of it , you are getting rid of something really special (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) .....I know one thing though, if I ever decide to get rid of mine, I'm not gonna ask the question you did !! Man surrender, and repeat the fact your gonna keep it again !!!!! Really though, I think I speak for all when I say you have a beautiful car, and you really, really should try your best to keep it. Even if you have to put it in storage. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Again, thanks for the input. I am keeping the 914.

erik, you have a beautiful 914! i occasionally find myself pondering the same question, so i totally appreciate where you're coming from. the fact that

a) you have a sweet 914, in exceptional, hard-to-find condition...that is appreciating... and i assume fully sorted and totally reliable...

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) early boxsters that are dropping in price aren't exactly known to be quality cars...are depreciating fast (for a reason, i'm told by my mechanic)...and can be had any day of the week...

c) you have a modern DD already...

totally support your decision, IMHO.

is it mostly the performance that had you thinking boxster? have you considered a couple mild enhancements, like EFI, lightened flywheel, mild suspension tuning, and good exhaust (like a triad)? i bet that'll renew your love affair with the 914!

my temptress happens to be the '98-'02 bmw m coupe (yup, the either-love-it-or-hate-it one...though if you've driven one, it's impossible to be in the latter group!). it's probably the only car other than a 914 (ok, and a ferrari 206 gt) that gets my pulse racing every time i spot one. my 914 is my daily driver, so sometimes i miss the modern amenities like good defrost, water-tight cabin, AC for scorching days, good wipers, and lack of engine fumes...but then, sure enough, the weather breaks, the road twists, the targa top's off...and i find myself apologizing to my teener for ever even entertaining the idea of trading her for any other car!

when the time comes that i have 2 parking spots, there'll be an m coupe next to my 914. i say if you like the boxster, go for one, no matter what others say/think...just don't sell your 914!

this helps me w/ my perspective:
it's not about having what you want...
but wanting what you have. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Maybe this is a bad idea, but rent a Boxster for a week and see how you feel in it. Even better, take the Boxster out for a fun run, then immediately jump in the 914 and go on the same route. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Betcha rethink the Boxster.

The part of the background of my original question is about what is more fun and less about resale value and to a certain extent reliability. It all comes down to: Is it more fun to drive a slow car fast or a fast car slow?

Also, a delay is better than a disaster. So, I am not selling the 914 for now.

One more important thing as I rediscovered at today's Tied House gathering: Fun is about the people too!

Erik,
forget about the Boxster and look at some 964s (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

actually you can find some very nice Boxsters right now.

before I bought the C2 I almost bought a very nice, loaded, low mileage 2000S for under $20K. There are some real deals out there.

964s will be a bit more expensive (being some of the last real 911s) but worth the money I feel.

I got my very nice clean, straight C2 for $16K

do I regret selling the Puttputt, occasionally, but then I take the C2 for a drive and then it doesn't hurt so much... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

The C2 or the Boxster can be a much better daily driver, a safer daily driver, and with the C2 it doesn't really depreciate very much at all.

Boxsters will never have the cache of the 911s, and so many of the Boxsters have been built they just aren't collectable no matter what folks may say about certain models.

and yes, I will probably own another 914 one day. Either a very nice conversion or an original 6 would be preferable.......like the one I used to own... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Here is something to think about also. Do you already own another classic car ? One of the things that keeps me interested in the 914 - if all else fails- is that I always pictured myself like the "older brother" or "dad" in the movies or commercials......you know, waxing the classic on a saturday afternoon, before cruising, shining the tires, doing the oil change.....you know, everything except the pack of cigaretes in my sleeve !!! .....I must say, I enjoy having my son help me clean the "classic", and when we go out on a cruise afterwards, he sees the rewards of a clean classic by the people giving a thumbs up......He even says "Go fast, daddy !!!" He knows one day this car is for him, and my daughter. I'm just glad they're still babies !!!! So you have a classic hobbie, at least make sure you have another one before you get rid of it, if you must !

i personally prefer the former because it's more fun. but it doesn't have to be either or. i mean you can make your 914 zippier!

i think it comes down to more on the type of driver you are, and your preferences. they are quite different driving machines. not one better than the other...just one is more suited to some, and the other more suited for others.

me, i like the rawness and simplicity of the 914. yes, i have driven boxsters, and i do like them, just don't love them. but that's just me. i mean, if you value ABS, AC, power top, airbags, etc, the choice is clear. if you like a car that makes you work to get it to go fast, and involves you more (in my opinion), then the 914.

what i was getting at is that, with some power and performance upgrades, you can make your 914 much quicker and much more fun. it doesn't take much power to make a 914 feel fast. a 914-4 is, what, 2100lbs? (and you can get that down some!) compare that to a boxster at over 3,000. power-to-weight. i like lighter, but that's me.

do you feel an attachment to the 914? seriously. it's probably hard to say no on a 914 forum...but if that's the case, maybe you can pass the car to a sibling/relative, and keep it in the family. just because we all love our 914 doesn't mean you do. life's too short - go where you're happy.

my 2 cents.

erik, my apologies a bit there. for whatever reason, i thought you weren't really into your 914...but i see (now that i've looked) that you're no new 914 newbie. it's not like anything's been said that you didn't already know/have thought about...except maybe renting a boxster for awhile to make sure that's what you really want.

and if you haven't driven a 914-4 with 140+ horse that's been set up well, i'd say you should give that a go, too, because i think that'll give a compelling counter to the boxster experience.

my vote is still to bump your 914's power. if not for you, then for the next family member who owns the car - to make sure they keep it.
