Wow, I haven't updated this is a while. I'll try to bring you up to date. I installed the motor, found out I had low compression due to a leaking valve. I removed the engine again, removed the head, fixed the valve, installed the engine, and was able to get it working enough to drive. Well...... after a thousand miles or so I lost another valve seat. So now I am going to do what I originally should have done and replace it with a complete, low mileage 1.8L motor until I can get around to rebuilding the original motor...

After a trip to MUSR11 and seeing all the fun everyone else was having, I became inspired and have decided to build a 2056 motor for this car. I will gather parts as the budget allows and hopefully have this done in the next year or so.

And now onto the pictures... I started tearing down the engine. This was my first time splitting a case so it was quite exciting.

What I had to work with...

I found some duct tape on this engine. It was covering up the JB Weld on one of the galley plugs

Remember the metal flakes that I found in the oil? My camshaft bearings were completely trashed and it was immediately obvious once I opened it up.

Despite the cam bearings being trashed, everything else looked remarkably well from a novice's point of view. Nothing I can see seems out of whack but let me know if you guys see something I don't.

And finally the galley plugs. You can see where I started removing some of this mess. I will remove everything, tap the holes, and install plugs.

I thought I would give a little update on this...

So far I've managed to put 17K miles on the car since first getting it on the road 23 months ago. Not too shabby. Currently I'm running a 1.8L engine with CIS injection and it is running beautifully. I'm still planning to build up the original 2.0L to 2056 but all I've managed to do is drill and tap the oil galley plugs so not much progress there.

I have done some little things to the car such as add new horns, a new clutch, rear trunk shocks, and I also ordered new targa vinyl for it but have yet to install it. I will post pics as I get work done but so far too much driving has been happening (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) Gah, I love this car.

I just read through your entire thread and have to say you've done an outstanding job on your car.

Here in California, too many cars with that amount of rust are just parted and the carcasses sent to the bone yard (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

You've shown remarkable talent with your metal working skills, and I congratulate you for keeping another one on the road. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
