Yikes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)
One of my students at yesterdays GGR school, showed up with a new Cayman. Beautiful car on the outside of course, but this one had a turbo kit; like $10K. Given this was an S Cayman, the student, who did the installation himself, said total power would be 500HP. OK, now I know what I want to drive around and then take to the track, change the tires and surprise a lot of folks. Oh, unfortunately, this was his first outting and he was having some issues with the "operation." He decided to park it and tomorrow will be taking it to a turbo specialist to do a little tuning. For any of you that have driven a Cayman you know how well they handle, so maybe a Cayman, with 500hp, is a pretty good combination. I know I know... what about the transmission with all that power - forgot to ask him about that as we were somewhat busy. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

500 HP Cayman would be awesome car! I can only imagine what that car would do on big track. You could put GT3's in your mirrors. ...it would be an awesome AX car too with some big huge Hoosiers. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)
The Boxster is getting lighter and quicker. Down to 2375 lbs now. It beat all 7 Buggies and that DM Fiat X19 yesterday and it got within one and half seconds of that nasty Yellow M3. Here is his run. http://www.vimeo.com/4703066 ...And that was on your old tires that I ran 11 runs with LPR a few weeks ago - corded one on my 3 lap de Anza run yesterday. Now thats what I call getting value out of some race tires (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) This post has been edited by grantsfo: May 18 2009, 02:25 PM |

With a bit more suspension tweaking and a bigger diet I think this would be a great way to go.

No turbo lag or extra weight (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) Rumor is a heavily cloaked Cayman RSR is lapping Ze 'Ring as Porsche is looking for a way to knock over the Italian prancing horse that is quickly becoming an ALMS favorite. I would dig it if they gave the it GTR moniker just to poke Nissan a bit. |

Actually a little less than I thought, but maybe the normal 60 minutes doesn't hold for a boxster which at 2375# (WOD) is heaver than the weight attributed to 60 minutes. But all in all about 60% of the per run cost for new, so pretty good. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) Did they hold up until they corded? |

One had a groove in it on inside and I didnt bother to remount it to outside. With -2.5 camber I have for track driving on DOT tires and hard driving it continued to make groove deeper until it corded. Other three still have a few runs left. They stuck great. I treated them with tire claw. Hundred degree weather at De Anza helped them stick! This post has been edited by grantsfo: May 18 2009, 10:08 PM |

Forgot to ask. I assumed that this was a M97 based Cayman? Was this a new Cayman or old M96 engine based car? If older M96 I suspect owner has ticking time bomb.
When I was looking for used M96 motors to replace the blown motor on my Boxster I found 3 that had at one time had aftermarket forced induction that had major mechincal issues. This post has been edited by grantsfo: May 21 2009, 05:45 PM |

Last year or the year before I had a student with a Cayman with a blower... the guy was waiting for a solo check out ride.... They asked me to jump in the car and see if he was ok to solo.... but anyway..
I had never been in a Cayman before, and had no chance to question the car regarding mods etc..... I was "blown" away by the car.... he could put it anywhere on the track, the car would shoot out of a corner like very few cars I've been in.. Anyway.... I knew there was something suspect about this car... it wasn't a run of the mill Cayman.. Found out in the pits it was supercharged, had all monoball suspension, big brakes... An amazing car.... And yes I bumped him up a run group |

I don't have any real experience driving porsches, but I was absolutely blown away. I've driven an 04 subaru sti around the track, and honestly felt the turbo cayman would mercilessly dust it off (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Nothing like feeling your insides pushed rearwards when you punch the accelerator lol |
