QUOTE(Dr Evil @ Oct 18 2009, 08:48 PM) *

OK, here is the deal.

$300 per builder for as many boxes as you can build in 2 full days (usually 2).

Spectators are free and welcome. Spectators seem to learn a lot and ask very good questions. Typically, buy the end of day one the spectators are helping the builders with resolving their mistakes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Date is the 5-6 of Dec.

I will supply special tools, the rest bring normal tools with you.

I will also pay for: brake cleaner/carb cleaner, nail brushes, aluminum basins and sheets to clean and build on, gloves, rags, methane, attitude, vulgar language.

If you want to prepay for used parts (because my supplies are limited) PM me and we can talk.

If you have core transaxles to part, bring them and make some $$. We tend to do a lot of free swapping at the event, though.

If you want to buy new parts let me know and I will see what prices I can get you. Sooner is better than later so I can ship them rather than try to pack them in my suit case (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I am not sure when I will close registration, if at all. The thing you lose by registering late is supplies and parts so be forewarned. Please register early!!!

Thats all for now. I think the rest of the questions are answered in the thread here.

As an aside, I am going to see about maybe including the 915 box. Dont hold your breath, but if I can I will (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well there you have it! Get your act together and prepare for the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic in Sonoma Ca. at Original Customs!

Dug, right now anyone who said they would be a builder is only tentative. If you are serious, I will need your clinic fees (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) PM me if you are still in.

I'll be bringing two 914-6 boxes and some side shifters for parts. I was looking at various gear ratios for building a tighter/shorter box in one of the six boxes.

How about A-GA-KA-R-ZA
GA comes on the 914-6 mainshaft
KA is a ZD flipped
R is a V flipped
ZA comes in the 914-6

The shift points would be: 40-60-80-100 mph and top speed in 5th would be near 150mph which is way more than enough.
The best would be the nice tight 2nd to 3rd.
3rd to 4th would be a similar drop to the stock O-V drop.
4th to 5th would be a bit larger, but 5th is really just for cruising.

I got a question...the good Dr. already rebuilt my box, however a family friend has a 912 and I'm sure his transmission needs a rebuild. How closely related are the 912 trannies to the 914?

I am not a 912 expert and I you should get confirmation from the good DR but...
Depending on the year it might have an early sand cast case rather that the die cast case but the gears and shafts should be essentially the same. Shift rods are a bit different but not enough that it would be a problem.

I am planning on coming as a spectator (and assistant as needed) but I can bring some parts and probably a metal jig for set up and the dog teeth tools. I have a complete side shift trans I can sell if someone needs it. Condition is unknown for sure but it is supposed to be usable.

the 911/ 912 transmissions types 901/xx & 902/xx (were used almost interchangeably) are essentially the same as the 914 transmission, and the type 911. Most of the 90z/xx transmissions are aluminum cased, but a few late 1969 are magnesium. They have somewhat different differentials than the 914 which has something closer to the 915 differential. However, the main shaft, pinion shaft and gears are essentially the same. So, Mike's clinic covers the 901, 902, 911 and 914 transmission as essentially the same box. Even the 905 sporto box is much the same.

Jim,
You can assist me since the tools you are bringing are just what will be needed for mine. I plan a swap to an M 3rd, S 4th, and X 5th. Ron says my synchros are bad on the replacement gears and one of them has bad dog teeth but all of that can be swapped onto the new gears from my original ones which he replaced the synchros on last year.

Also, remember, Mark has that good part for the broken piece on your transmission...

Dug, why those ratios? What is your tq curve like?

Biohazard (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif), a 912 box is fine unless it is form a 76 as that would be a 915 and I wont have the tool for that unless something changes between now and then.

Biohazard?

Considering you still owe me an invoice from my rebuild, you have to be nice! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'll look into the 912 tranny and see if he wants me to rebuild it for him and I'll get added to the list.

I just took apart an early 911, 912 5 speed. It is considerably different. The case is the first thing you notice. It is longer from the differential to the intermediate plate. The intermediate plate is thinner so the length of the gear stack is the same. The bearings are different but may be interchangeable. I tossed them cause I had better.

The gear stack is similar. The gears and hubs are the same but the brake bands, stops and retaining ring are different. The sliders are the same. The pinion for the speedo drive is larger in diameter, so chuck that. It will cause you great grief if you try to use it. Both shafts are the same.

The differential is different. The splines for the output shafts are different.

The good news is this was A, F, M, S, X. so I used M and S for better gearing on the AX track. I used the stock ZD for an overdrive for the highway. If I trailered I would have used X. I toyed with getting a GA shaft and I still may. A is fine cause I just use it to get started and short shift to second.

The bands and blacks are just the same as the early model 901. The int plate bearings are sometimes the same. All the 5 speed 912 boxes have AFMSX in them. What do you mean the diff is different and the pinion is different? They should be identical and 7:31 ratio.
