(IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I take everything seriously!!!!

In fact, I'm in the process of getting extremely pissed off.

I'll get there in a minute or so.

Wait ..... it's coming.

Ah screw it ... to much effort and time to get pissed off.

Nevermind.

LOL, actually the admins on the 'real' porsche ( as distinct from VW wanna be's ) boards are much quicker to tell you to RTFM or search. On the vendor sponsored boards, almost never see it as you would probably go to another vendor.

I find the search engine on the site impossible to find anything with. I used google to search the site and that works alot better.

The search engine here on the site actually works pretty well. You just have to learn the 'tricks' of how to use it. There is a guide now, on the search page, explaining those 'tricks'.

And I actually like that the same question gets asked again. If it's asked a lot, then it's a common question. If it's answered a lot, that means that the search will get filled up with more and more answers for the people who do search, making it easier to find.
So answering the same question over and over is actually helpful in the long run.

Are you implying we'll be here for the "long run"?

This forum is no different than any other.

If the manual is poorly written or non-existent, RTFM may be the reason they are here.

The search function may not be effective. The less than average user won't know the tricks to finding what they need (or to use the Google advanced search).

...or they are just plain too lazy to do any of the above!

I'm amazed how many ( not only newbies ) don't actually have a haynes at least, before they ask the questions -

It's pretty tough to come up with a question that hasn't been answered here over the years, so why bother allowing new posts at all? Just lock the site down and make everyone use the search!
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/bs.gif)
No, it's posts that keep this place alive. It's a forum, a social community. Let it live!

If someone is bothered when someone posts a "same ole question," maybe they should answer and include a link to a search example instead of getting pissy. Then everyone is reminded about search, and the newbies see how to use it.

I agree we should have a manual and use it. But...

This forum is about 914s. It should be absolutely cool for people to ask questions without referring to the manual first. This is a great resource, and we should encourage people to use it instead of chasing them off to another one. Especially since this place is a community where most of us enjoy talking everything about 914s, even if it's already in the manual.

I think at one time we thought about having tech articles to answer some of the more common questions... tire size, what oil, valve adjustments, etc... some of those were put into the classic threads when it came around. a couple others actually are tech articles now, but there's always questions you feel "are specific to your situation" that in fact, later you seee, the general answer applies too.. besides, every thread seems to make 2-3 tangents, so who cares what the question was to begin with?

If its planning for work to do - I search.

If I am walking in from the garage cussing a blue streak I just ask. By the time I have cooled off and had a beverage (frosty or otherwise) I usually have the info I need to correct what broke.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) BTW, I do use the search function, but also bookmark posts that I find very useful currently and possible references for future projects....

I definately like and use the classic section and the tech section.... I try to post my own experiences and hopefully they will be added to the combined knowledge of this BBS/community....
