I think it's fun to see how quickly a thread can degenerate, especially if it's a common question. Besides, the 4 vs. 6 consensus could change. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif)

So answering the same question over and over is actually helpful in the long run.

Are you implying we'll be here for the "long run"?

What consensus? They made a bit more than 3000 6 cylinders and over 100,000 4 cylinders. Seems like a slight lead for the 4 cylinders... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I have no problem with repeat questions. Try teaching the same class for years. Same question - different student. Nothing different here. Someone new to 914s comes along and until they learn their resources they have to ask. A little gentler response might go a long ways... Besides, we all live in a different culture. Some of us are CW's, some autocrossers, some track rats, some just want to street drive the car. Those answers are different much of the time depending on the culture. Open discourse allows the new person and the rest of us to learn something new and see it from the other culture.

I say, ask away...

I think that even though many posts seem to be the same there are some differences that actually help people look at other areas as well.In other words the end result of fixing a problem might be fixed by doing something totally different from a similar post. Plus it keeps everyone thinking and talking.

It's pretty tough to come up with a question that hasn't been answered here over the years, so why bother allowing new posts at all? Just lock the site down and make everyone use the search!
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/bs.gif)
No, it's posts that keep this place alive. It's a forum, a social community. Let it live!

If someone is bothered when someone posts a "same ole question," maybe they should answer and include a link to a search example instead of getting pissy. Then everyone is reminded about search, and the newbies see how to use it.

+1 .......... I am a another site where some jerks get extremely mad at newbies for asking a common question ........ I don't see a problem with it because as a few have already mentioned, this is an enthusiasts site and lots of people come on here just to fraternize with fellow 914 fans/owners ..... As someone most likely to ask the dumb newbie question, I find the search function valuable, but very time consuming. As a result, I don't think I've ever asked the dumb newbie question (outside of PMing someone), but I've spent a lot of time searching through discussion threads that turn out to be sometimes useful, sometimes entertaining, sometimes irrelevant and sometimes enlightening but about something else entirely (serendipity can be really handy for those of us who have 914 things about their 914 that they need/want to address).

What I've found visiting this site over the years is that new questions on old topics generally spark a few fresh comments and, just as important, there are often many pointers to the near classic threads that have already hashed over the issues. Those links can be invaluable because they not only tend to answer the question, they also tend to include pointers to still more threads that can elaborate on a topic, or offer more context for the problem solution, or just further educate us newbs. In other words, opening a new thread on an old question can be the best search engine.

Finally, quite often when a new old question is asked, time has provided a different, if not better, answer. It may be that parts, tools or techniques become available that weren't around at the time of the original answer(s) or the collective knowledge has shifted and the answer really has changed. Recommendations about tires, suspension and other performance upgrades, for example, can change over time.

So, I guess my vote is No, allow the unwashed to ask those already answered questions!

on clubrsx.... it gets annoying because it's the same questions, every day.

here, not as many people, so the questions don't come up as frequently, and yet provide little reminders.

So, it works here, someplace like clubrsx, not so much.
