So, I replaced the carpet in my car a month or 2 ago and we have had some steady rain since. Felt my carpet today as I was working in my car and felt that both the driver and pass sides are wet. Not the hump in between, not the seats, not the door panels... just the carpet in the foot wells. Where would you recommend I begin searching for leaks? I bought a superweave cover from Cal Car Covers today in hopes that it will cure 98% of the issue but this still bothers me... any help?

Thanks.

Are you referring to teh seals that go on either side of the glass? So water doesnt get in teh door? Or are you referring to what surrounds teh glass to teh car.

make sure you check the seal around the rear window too; the water runs down behind the backpad and oozes throughout the carpet.

Might be window seals, but you should see the water coming down the glass. Also could be a plugged up drain in the fresh air unit, allowing the water to come through the heat vents.

If the water pools behind the passenger seat, check for holes in your lower firewall in the hell hole area.

In my early 914 days, I'd get water in from there, as it ran through the small engine grate over the battery and into the hell hole area, of course, then through the firewall and voila, wet interior.

Can you explain to me where to look for this?

Once upon a time, I also fixed this same 'mystery' issue by correctly seating the windshield washer squirters. The previous person hadn't gotten them installed all the way down, so water was getting in.

The fresh air unit is the grill in front of the windshield. If the drains are plugged with leaves, etc then the box can fill up and leak water into the cabin.

You can use a hose to simulate rain and then crawl around the car looking for drips. That's how I found out about the squirters leaking.

The question should be where does a 914 not leak at ? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)

Wiper seals might do this , but most of these components are in the front compartment , just exactly where are the carpets getting wet ?? All over , driver's side , passenger side , under the seats , foot by the pedals , on the door silss and the adjacent long area ??

I know some will cringe when I say this , in years past some of the old cars I could afford when I was a kid , some would leak from who knows where , I would take a scratch awl and punch a small hole in a few spots to drain the water out , thereby eliminating carpets staying wet , allowing them to drain and dry out. I know this may be a harsh idea , but until you find and stop the leak , you do want to get the water out and not let it sit on the pan starting rust to form , once the =leake is repaired / remedied, you can / or have some one to weldup the small holes left by the scratch awl. AND yes it sounds like a real crazy idea (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif) , to punch holes into floor pans that as a 914 owners we are trying to eliminate.

Good luck...

Agreed. Except for the rear window; it leaks at the bottom and disappears behind the backpad only to reappear as soggy carpet. This leak also helps destroy the firewall and inner longs

Have the same problem with my 914 in Belgium... Should use an ordinairy librificant sealkit to prevent water from entering behind the backpad in the passengerscompartiment... Gonna do it tomorrow with acidfree sealkit.

Please keep me informed if I should overlook something. Thx

check the side Targa seals - the ones your windows roll up into. They get old and deformed letting water seep through. Also make sure the front targa seals above the windshield are not damaged and that the clamps holding the roof tight are still okay.
