Porsche Press Information I received today ...

Michael Macht, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, presented the Porsche 918 Spyder concept car at its world debut this evening in Geneva. This mid-engined two-seater combines the performance of a super-sports car with the CO2 emissions of a small compact, an innovative plug-in hybrid concept reducing emissions to just 70 grams CO2 per kilometre and fuel consumption to 3.0 litres/100 kilometres (94 mpg imp). Within this concept Porsche combines a V8 power unit delivering more than 500 hp and three electric motors with overall output of 160 kW.

In its design and interior architecture, the Porsche 918 Spyder combines classic elements with appropriate solutions for the future. Starting on Tuesday, March 2nd, at 8:15 am (CET), the Porsche 918 Spyder will also be presented at the Porsche Stand in Hall 6 of the Palexpo Building during the Geneva Motor Show.

I suppose I will be receiving a letter from Porsches attorney now about using the 918. I think I had it first. Maybe I should send them a letter!

BTW: THAT is the future forward for the 914! drooley.gif

Likely never made ... it is just a design study afterall.

Interesting... I say make a coupe version and go GT racing!

Looks hot.

That's two in a row now; that coupe design based on the Panamera that had a hint of the 599 GTB at the front, and now this with a front end nod to the 458 Italia.

Who says Germans and Italians can't play together.

I would say Tesla beater.

This car seems to be aimed at the 'green' crowd, and those people that have the money for this car, also have money for the Tesla roadster or the Fisker Karmin. And those two companies are leading the pack in 'green' sports cars. I got a ride in a tesla (the headquarters is in my city) and it was fuching amazing, felt like a rollercoaster.

Purdy,

What's with the twin dark snorkly things over the engine.

Seem way too small for decent V-8 airflow and if they are intakes, they will provide a lot of induction noise to the cab area.

Mebbe they are twin electrodes to get the car charged,

Mebbe they are a surfboard rack.

Mebbe they are a hanger so you can hang the car from the garage ceiling.

In any event, they look kinda slapped on.

If they produce the 918 I hope they don't water it down like they did the Boxster between concept and production models.

That was done to use existing tooling between the 996 and the Boxster to produce as many as possible at a low price point... relatively speaking. They certainly did that and I really like the Boxster.

The 918 looks like a Carrera GT successor.
Dr. Roger
It kinda looks like Porsche's original DC wheel motors have carried thru to 2010, doesn't it?

Nice donor car!

I wonder if the drive train will fit in a 914 engine bay???

How much will it cost to replace all 50 battery trays in 10 years when
they have all rusted out?

Whats up with the see thru rims? Way too busy in the rear. Looks like they had way too much time on their hands. I know, lets add something else. Side pipes? Really?

Generally I like the shape, but it is way too "busy" in the details.

After watching the video, the spoiler and the black hood ornaments/ air intakes over the engine appear to be non-functional at speed. For still shots, they positon them.

This view of the open door is way fricking busy. It's a detailers dream with a bazillion little surfaces to clean and detail.

And the rear view mirrors? Look like rear view cameras on a stick. A very busy stick.
Cupomeat
As a concept, I love it.

As a technology, I'd say it is time

but as a real car, it will be entirely too expensive to even aspire to.

I think the busy-ness and the silly side backup camera will go away in the transition to real production (whatever that means as with a real RS motor, I bet it will be $250k and they will only make 1500).

So, my verdict is that I love it. I'll be sending them an email to get me on the list of buyers and hopefully the lottery will pay off before then...

maybe I should actually play it.

While the drive train technology is impressive on this 918 Hybrid - I hate to be the contrarian bubble-burster here, but I find this design overworked & gaudy - not sleek nor timeless at all!!!! barf.gif
I mean this designer/stylist apparently never saw a scoop nor curve nor doo-dad that he/she didn't like & want to stick on the design. laugh.gif

IMHO - the earlier VW based "Return of the 914" study illustrated in Sept. 2008 Motor Trend on-line was a a better start at a slick & timeless design concept (gold/yellow version below - they need to hide the door handles & clean up the side scoops or can them though).

Of course - different strokes for different strokes as they say, and most of you posting here are stroking yourselves over this "yet another scoopy Spyder" - so to each his/her own!
biggrin.gif lol-2.gif av-943.gif

No offense Johannes - turn about is fair play - especially one designer's opinions to another designer's! We just have different tastes in cars I guess! biggrin.gif

PS - "Form follows Function" (Mies van der Roh IIRC) - or should do so in any good design. As many later posts have noted (aside from me) - lotsa stuff stuck on there with no purpose other than to try to get the prototype a gig in a Hollywood flick!

Oooo-Oooo - let's add some more, what else is in the spare parts bin!!?? wacko.gif

I completely agree with all the bling and christmas ornament comments. Prototype cars are often over the top. Strip that thing down to the bare bones and make it a real world car.

Oh, and we could call it a twin targa!
MDG
I agree the 918 design has too much show circuit bling but its encouraging to see Porsche working on something like this. Most of the extras on these show cars - and the over the top body lines - never make it to the street anyway.

I think clean, simple lines will always win out and I like the drawing in Tom's post too. The thing is, the 918 is a real design currently being worked on at Porsche while the drawing above is a design study by a staff artist at Motor Trend named Mark Stehrenberger. It first came about in '03 or '04 as part of an article called 'Cars We'd Like to See." Writers dreamed up their wish list of future cars and Stehrenberger put ink to paper. Here's his earlier '914' from that article 6 or 7 years ago.

I dig those 308 rims with knock offs...
tat2dphreak
while I like this, it does have a lot going on... but it's just a concept right now.

I think if a form of this comes about, they will be using the boxster/cayman platform and just make a hybrid version that will be watered down in comparison to this.

but yes, I like the MT artists rendering better...

IIRC the MT article was dreaming of that porsche design, with a subaru H4 turbo motor... which , while I would not complain about, would never happen.. I can't see Porsche or VW for that matter saying to Subaru "we can't make this cheap enough, can we buy about 20,000 WRX motors from you?"
MDG
That's the article, Wayne. It was billed as the 914 STi

I guess the VW/Porsche saga over the last few years resurrected interest and MT had Stehrenberger update the Porsche and add a VW version.

He did a 'what if' Ghia about 10 years ago that was to the Ghia what the new Beetle is to the old Bug. Kind of a what-if-it-stayed-in-production sort of thing. That was cool too.

Not offended. I didn't draw this thing. I think this kind of design will have his time.
It's impressive but over designed. I own a 914 not because it's "cheap", but because I like the design and engeneering. I have never been a 911 enthousiast. In my opinion the 356, 928 and Boxster are way much better designed. Let's see in 30 years what will remain a timeless design...

Lawsuit pending biggrin.gif

I think it looks fantastic, not a fan of the extra styling cues but over all I love it, with 700hp and AWD the thing should haul ass too!
Apparently the plastic discs on the wheels were designed to help with lateral airflow.
You can see the spokes in the close up, nice optical illusion!

I dig the side exhausts too, those would sure make the exhaust easy in the 'biter.
tat2dphreak
I like the side pipes too, if I thought I could find a muffler small enough, that would be great in the teener....

or, one could go forward then, back with the exhaust... picture the 75-76 doube J tubes going forward then making a 180 bend and coming back for side-pipes biggrin.gif or just crossing the engine, 3-4 side engine exiting at the drivers side.. that sure would make changing the oil a bitch tho tongue.gif
