I guess I'm mostly looking for a stereo that doesn't look like it belongs in a Grand Prix or a Malibu.. Any suggestions?

Both PP & maybe AA sell a "modern-retro-look"radio for classic Porsches, but I don't think there's a CD in there.

In addition to the bumpity-bump problem with audio in our 914's, there's also that lovely LOUD engine behind your head to drown out the audio.

My buddy with the 1 owner (him) 71 that I posted, installed a CD changer in his glovebox, new speakers in the stock housings & ran them thru the OE 70's radio.

I'm putting the original AM-FM-8-track back in mine & play/strip the old 8-tracks which I still have! ... clickity-clack!!
You could always look for a real vintage one on Samba & evil-bay!?

The time has come when even cd players are obsolete in cars. Find the correct vintage am/fm and send it to one of those companies that retrofits the guts to modern. Have a blue tooth installed so you have am/fm and a blue tooth Ipod set up. Done..... no wires, no tapes, no cd's, and no skipping. I don't know for sure but I bet you could get satelite installed in one as well. At the very least HD radio.

Thats what I would do.

or just leave the stock stereo in, and mount a small amp somewhere and run it off an Ipod. Nothing visible, and a lot less than a period looking head unit.

I should have checked back here. The retro fitting of the stock unit sounds like a winner. Unfortunately I spent too much time hunting on the Crutchfield site and gave up. I settled for this one. 613BT838U Kenwood KDC-BT838U. Blue tooth built in.

That's a great radio. The Bluetooth will not work so well in the 914. Too much background noise. I have that radio in my truck. Love the radio, can't used the bluetooth.

I can't speak to the bg noise, but at the very least you can leave a ipod dock/wire in the glove box, set a play list on Itunes (use genius) 100 songs or so, plug in the ipod, throw it in the box and fugggetabautit. All outa site, thats what I do in the 911.

These guys do Blaupunkt, and Becker, although I don't like the price. I think I would find an am/fm only and have it done, as you'll not need a tape or cd. If I had my way and everything else on the car was done, I'd pick the radio it came with and have it set up for Ipod and satelite. That's what my muscle car is gonna get.

CDs are obsolete.

Just wire in an iPod/MP3 player/AUX input to your plain jane AM/FM head unit and you're gold.

I use M-Audio IE-30's and an iPud.

The IE-30's take all ambient noise out and, no wiring, no fuss and each person in the car can listen to whatever the hell they'd like to (just BYOT).

The radio delete plate now houses the fuel gauge. That would be the most "period correct" for my car. LOL

The modulator is a quick easy way to go...here's one $29 free shipping. Ebay Link They come-up dirt cheap on ebay all time, so don't jump in and buy too much. I had bought a couple new ones for $10 each.
