Good Dr...
My car generally shifts and goes into every gear just fine, but sometimes will grind going into first. It seems to happen more when the car is warmed up. I have:
- installed and adjusted a new clutch cable
- replaced all my shift bushings
- rewelded my clutch cable tube
- installed a rennshift (no difference, same behavior before and after)

If i'm ginger going into 1st and hit it at just the right angle, I can get it to not grind. I get no grind going into any other gear, including reverse.

Here are my questions:
1. My guess is my 1st gear synchro is on its way out. Do you agree?
2. Replacing the synchro is not a project i want to undertake right now because I want to DRIVE. Can I improve things in the short term or extend the dying synchro's life by putting in some fresh or different trans oil?

Thanks!!
Rich

my 2 cents while waitin on the good doctor's expert advice : )

you do not want to further damage the first reverse slider - as it is big bucks.

if you can resolev your problem with a new syncro band and first gear dog teeth - that would be great.

some replace this stuff withoput taking trans out of car - just removing the tail cone.

That thread, while very impressive, scared the bejeezus out of me. I hope I was not peering into my future...

It does sound like your 1st gear synchro..

Time to go to an evil clinic....

IIRC after June 20, EvilWorks is gone forever, to the land of medical residency.

But, there are two members that have stepped up to carry the flame.

Does the tranny wagon ever make its way to MA? I would be very interested.

Rich,

RJMII (Jim) and I are doing transmission work now after Dr Evil has retired. I am sure either one of us could help you out.

As mentioned above, if your first gear syncro is worn, delaying the repair will only make it worse and the first gear slider is an expensive part. Assuming it is worn, there really isn't much you can do as far as short term fix. If you don't want to tackle a full rebuild yourself, you could just pull the end cover off and just do first gear. I could help you out with that. If you search I think there is some threads here where Dr Evil has described how to do that with the transmission in the car. If you don't want to do the work yourself, I can offer up my services for you. Just PM me if you are interested.

Just put a bigger motor in it and start out in 2nd gear, problem solved. aktion035.gif
