Wolfgang,
Where in California is it? There are so many of us here that I am sure someone could lay eyes on it for your friend...

ooops ... little misunderstanding rolleyes.gif

the car is at a dealer in Germany, but as you can see at the pics, it still has the blue plates

Wolfgang,

I'm guessing that those are not the original plates for that 914-6, because the sequence is well after my 73 2.0's 530GVS originally licensed in Nov. 72 ("U" vs. "G" would've been a year or more after mine)- unless it's a late sale new of a 71 or 72 into the 73 or later calendar year.

It could've been an out-of-state (originally sold outside Calif.) then re-registered in CA in that UHI sequence, or a re-registration from whatever it's prior/original Calif. plate was when new, or it could be just some Calif Blue Plates stuck on there. I can check at AAA to see if it comes up on their DMV computer at all.

BTW - I'm just getting back to my emails/PMs after the holiday, so answering your last PM on your -6 DMV info is next. smile.gif

Hope you had a good santa_smiley.gif !

.... or a yellow - see at the passenger door handle? idea.gif

Also, one must ask if it was a Euro 914-6 without F sidemarkers & imported to the USA in the mid/late 1970's (ergo the later series blue CA plates), or if somebody "shaved" the sidemarkers!!?? confused24.gif

Both front fender wells are solid orange as is part of the long. shades.gif

Good point. It also lacks the US-only "PORSCHE" script on the engine lid. idea.gif

And if the rear bumper is correct, it would indicate a early car rather than later. popcorn[1].gif

agree.gif to both Andy! .... many eyes are better than any one pair!

I was just pointing out in addition that there is yet another yellow & maybe a green on there by the door handle - as well as the orange (I did notice the wells & long). So perhaps an accident or rust repair/replacement at the door/jamb?

In addition to lacking the sidemarkers & PORSCHE letters - it also has USA F TS & Taillight Lenses, but those would've been required to be changed upon import to the USA - IIRC.

I just noticed too that it's a USA 914-6 rear badge, not the VW-Porsche one.

Makes one start to wonder!? huh.gif

Wolfgang needs to get someone near it to take a look in person! blink.gif
... I'd want to know if this was a "made-up" or "rear" 914-6, with all of these discrepancies & oddities.

BTW - Wolfgang's "new" -6 has a known original CA blue plate in the "D" series at late May 71, while my 73 2L has a "G" 16+ months later at Nov. 72 - so I'm guessing that it wasn't until 1975-76 or later to have this one's "U" series plates. I don't recall what year they added the 7th front digit to the CA blue plates (i.e: #xxx### series) - maybe 78 - 80-ish - prior to going to the white ones, so this plate was before that, but not much with "U" to "Z" series.

So if an early -6 per the rear bumper, then it was definitely re-registered in CA later in the 70's, as I speculated above.

Anyone out there have a CA blue plate with ### Uxx ?? - If so, what year was it registered for that plate in CA?

Thanx George & Jeff!

Wolfgang, I just called AAA & this 914-6 is currently registered in CA on a PNO (Planned Non-Operation) since 2009, and was first registered under this plate in CA in 1977, and it does go to a 1970 Porsche, but the part of the DMV computer record that AAA can access does not indicate the model type at all (not even 914 - let alone 4 or 6).

You or he would have to contact DMV for other details & prior registration info. directly from Calif. DMV.

That leaves the question on 1970-77 as to where & what model it was.

I'll send you another quick PM on what they said about your own "new" -6.

I noticed another issue. Count the spokes on the wheels & if my eyes are correct there are (10) spokes, so it appears to be a 914-6 or (5) lug conversion. 4-cyl cars have only (8) spokes.

Forgot to add this photo of a 914-6 (10) spoke wheel.

confused24.gif It's a factory /6 with 5-lug steelies ...
Tom_T
I think a key issue is to check the VIN at all 3 places to verify that it is in fact a factory 6, as well as OE colors, condition, etc. - since it has some USA vs. Euro/World versions' discrepancies, & an unknown first +/- 7 years up to 1977 when these plates were assigned. Not saying it doesn't appear to be a six, but I've also seen a couple of fake-sixes passed off over the years.

Unfortunately, AAA wouldn't give me the VIN, not being my car.

blink.gif ... time for new glasses Tom, as I counted 10 holes (spokes) on it's wheels in the 1st post's pix. biggrin.gif
