What would be the widest tire size that can be used on the 914 stock without flares or widden body?

have you searched this question? i have and read many threads...still no clear answer. either 195 or 205 (sometimes) good luck DAve

Stock wheels 205s....
with just a little figuring and patience you can make 7" wheels fit with 225s...
the rear is the space issue, not front...
I have run 205x50s on 5.5s and 7s all around on a narrow bodied car as well as 225x50 on 7" rims all around on a narrow bodied car.

but for a completely stock car, 205s on 5.5s or 6s are the limit.

205/60 15. This will keep the speedometer accurate as it is the same height as the stock 165 15 tire. I would suggest however 195 65 x15 as the 205 bulges too much from the 5.5 wheel flexing the sidewall and causing the jello effect as you drive, the tire actually making the car wobble a bit when turning

that depends on the quality of the tire and the stiffness of the side walls...
I have run 205s on all of my 914s and have never had an issue with side wall flex, that includes street/AX/Track...but I have always used high quality performance tires.

+1 ......... I have a friend with a narrow body and he runs 225x50-15 on 7" fuchs ......... I believe he had to tug on the rear fenders a tad to prevent rubbing.

I run 205/60 Dunlops on stock 2.0 fuchs, no problems.

What is everyone's preferred tire brand? I'm looking for new tires and with so many choices, its hard to decide.

it seems wheel clearance varies side to side on ALL 914's. before paint, we used a wood baseball bat between the tire and wheel well to gently roll the edge in a little bit, an old timer trick.

The Kumho Ecsta is popular if you want something in (or close to) the original size. They were on my 914 when I bought it and I've been happy with them. Street driving, mostly in the dry, occasionally in the wet... only issue I've had is it seems you can roll onto the sidewall a bit in very sharp turns. Inexpensive too.

If you want to get away from stock size (move up to 195s or 205s), there are a lot more options out there.


Minor Hijack: I noticed that the spare in my car is a Tigar, stamped "Made in Yugoslavia" - looks like it's been used too. Anybody know what era that might date from?

I have to disagree with the Dr.
203/60R15 are 1% off the 155R15 tires and about 4% off the 165R15 tires.
195/65R15 are 0.1% off the 155R15 tires and about 3% off the 165R15 tires.

So your best choice is 195/65R15 with a 155R15 speedometer.

Given there is no more Yugoslavia for about 20 years you can guess.

Check the tire wall. Most of the '80 and up European tires have the production month/year marked.

I am running Bridgestone Potenza 205/60 15's on stock Fuch rims, nice ride, great handling and quiet, 73 2.0 that comes out on nice days, some "spirited" driving but mostly cruising on curvy roads with the top off. I have more than 12 feet of snow in my yard right now and pulling into the driveway is like entering a canyon, the teener is tucked away nicely in the garage, it has to share space with the snowblower, but in another 5 to 7 weeks I may be able to take her out, can't wait it has been a brutal winter snow wise, apparently all previous records for snowfall have been surpassed. Come on summer!!

... also 215/60R15, 205/70R14 and 195/60R16 are very close to the diameter of 165R15 tires.
