Full Version: Caliper upgrades??

So with plenty of cheap older 5 lug suspensions out there, and also Brad/Mueller's new hubs on the horizon, I am starting to wonder what brake upgrades are possible whilst retailing 3" caliper bolt spacing.

I have seen a few kits on the net that use a bolt-on adaptor and 944/964 calipers. Not sure which rotor they run.

Has anyone used a setup like this? Is it safe? Good? Happy? Cheap? Do I need a new M/C (they are 4 pot).

I have heard mention of 930 calipers too?

What are the options?

these are converted to 3.5" spacing (they are some oddball spacing of 3.75" or something like that), not sure if they have enough material to go down to 3"......I did read that TimT is having a set modified to change them to radial mount, with this modification, I would tend to think that with the correct adaptor, these could be bolted on to just about any car you could think of that is running disks.

I'm pretty sure the thicker 24mm rotors from the '85 and later cars would be the correct units. (instead of 20mm for the '84 and older)

930 calipers are 3.5" spacing and very expensive and not worth it since you can buy brand new calipers that are better and cheaper (for your application)

The radial mount adaptor doesn't look like rocket science.....

It's not the calipers or the adapters that will kill you...
It's the special rotors you need wacko.gif

That looks like sufficient stopping power eh?

Mmmmm. Calipers.

Hmmm... I see what you mean. Not as simple as I originally thought.

What about BMW calipers?? Did they retain the same bolt spacing when they went to vented rotors?

Has anyone used Boxster brakes?
Gary
Haven't heard from Rich Johnson in a while, but I know he had a Boxster brake upgrade. He's one of the early guys on -6 upgrades.

Pelican thread on 914club ad by Rich for brake upgrades

I updated my front with parts from him before the boxster upgrade was available. He modified 911 struts to take the brembo 4-pot caliper from a 944T. Add carerra rotors and the little 914 stops nicely. Not leaving well enough alone, am going with carerra rear calipers too...

You can see the strut in the first picture of my old thread: Gary's 914-6 conversion.

Gotta go with 16" wheels or bigger with either conversion.

Instead of the Boxster calipers, you can use the 964 or 944turbo front calipers (which you can find used for around $200 / $250)
The bolt spacing is off by something like 2mm (for 3.5" struts) which is easily taken care of
Like the Boxster calipers, they work with the 24mm 3.2 Carrera rotors ('84 through '89)

cheers,

Jeroen
