I am putting the finishing touches on my engine reseal project and I just noticed that my thermostat is shot. headbang.gif

Everyone including AA and Pelican lists them as NLA. I found the link below showing how to convert a T1 to work on a T4, and they have the T1 for $107 CDN. I couldn't even find a T1 anywhere else (bughaus, busdepot, cip1).

Anybody else been through this recently?

The type 1 thermostats are rated at a lower temp so they aren't as effective as the type 4 version for getting the car warmed up. I think they are 150 vs 180. I read that the version for a fuel injected 75 bug is hotter, not sure.

I got one from Rich at High Performance House.

closing out on Porsche stuff......They told me George at AA,
had bought a bunch....soooo try him... confused24.gif

I have a late model FI mexican bug thermostat that I'm going to modify to use on my 914. It uses a bimetal spring instead of a bellows. These were available a few years back. I'll see if I can find the invoice. Ray

I had a difficult time finding one until a member here came threw. I tried fixing the crack in the one I had and I bought another that was also defective. Pain in the ass part, but you need it

The problem with those is they fail in the closed position, where the stock will fail in the open.

One on right in pic may be OK. Not perfect, but I have seen worse that still work the air vanes correctly.

The middle one is definitely shot.

If the bellow itselt isn't cracked the soldered end usually is the source of the leak. They can be repaired by fixing the leak, desoldering the small hole in the threaded piece, compressing the bellows fully, injecting 2 ml 99% isopropyl alcohol thru the small hole in the threaded piece, then resolder the small hole in the threaded piece. The alcohol has a boiling point of about 85 degrees C which will expland the bellows and of course retract the bellows when it cools.......Don't throw those old ones away.....they can be fixed in most cases......even small cracks in the bellows can be repaired.......Jerry
