Top ten ways to tell you are in Bakersfield:

1. You have to explain to company from out of town what animal a "Tri-tip" comes from.

2. Drivers think a red traffic light is just a suggestion.

3. You think 6 tons of crushed rock makes a beautiful yard.

4. You notice your car overheating before you start it.

5. You no longer associate bridges or rivers with water.

6. You discover in July it only takes 2 fingers to drive your car.

7. You can make sun tea instantly.

8. You run your air conditioner in the middle of winter so you can use your fireplace.

9. People with black cars and upolstery are assumed to be from out of town.

10. You notice the best parking places are determined by shade instead of distance.

A. You're not from around here, are ya sweetheart? beerchug.gif

I believe this is where they filmed American Graffiti.

Most of my Mom's sisters migrated to California from Oklahoma, one of which ended up in Bakersfield. I remember the shock the 1'st time we visited from Seattle and I burned my feet getting out of our truck in a parking lot.
Never a more apt named town.
Is there a town just down the way named Blastfurnace ?

Ken, you've got to get out here!

A Tri Tip is about the most perfect cut of beef to BBQ. Not sure, but think it's the bottom part of a sirloin. Kinda triangular when trimmed.

WCC 2005 will feature same.

And I thought all the jokes were Fresno. Anyone remember that short lived TV show? Yes, it's our Fargo.
bernbomb914
Tri Tip was made famous in Santa Maria Ca. not Bakersfield. It used to be a low cost cut of meat like Brisket untell the Famous Santa Maria Marninated barbeque became the hotest thing on the west coast. Now everybody features it and it is expensive as a good cut of steak

Bernie
Andyrew
It was filmed ABOUT modesto, it was FILMED in and around Santa Rosa.

It was about Cruzing McHenry.. Which is now deemed Illegal in modesto...

Doesnt stop us from making one run up and down every saturday night or so. Although it DOes come alive with ricers and hot rodders around 12pm... Asside from that, no one is ever cruzing anymore.. (Darn rules)

Hey guys, "Tri-tip" is actually from the central coast. It is really called a triangle tip roast by the butchers. It couldn't even be found south past Ventura or north past Paso Robles until about '80. But it is probably one of the best B-B-Q meats around as long as you know how to cook it. Slow and Easy with plenty of beer3.gif
jgiroux67
Ya it's the hot spot for ricers to meet up at. I got alot of friends that are into that crap.

Hey Head,
Sent you a pm on the location for The Wizard.

How do you tell if you are from B-Field?

If your idea of a nice front yard has the crushed rock and at least three project trucks put up on cinder blocks.

I have been to the Pep Boys in Bakersfield. They always have those tires in stock!

I think it goes this way... "I'm just waiting till I can go back and get another Payday loan to get the tires!" blink.gif

Tanks for the Tri-tip explanation. Not familiar with that BBQ.

When I was living in the South (North Carolina) they taught me that pork BBQ is a very good way to go.

Take a whole hog, cut in half, put skin side up in a smoker at about 4:00 AM. Make sure temp never goes over 200.

Baste with sauce made from 1 gallon of vinegar, a buncha hot pepper flakes, and a little ketchup. Make 3 gallons.

Wait for the sun to come up. Salute the sunrise with tequila mixed with BBQ sauce. beer3.gif

Baste as required, monitor the fire and drink. beer.gif

Flip the hog halves at about 1:00 (skin side down). Add more sauce as required.

Pig is done at about 4:00 in the afternoon. Sucker is so tender and moist you simply reach in, grab a piece of meat, shake the fat off and eat.

mmmmm....Pig Pickin............

Try being from McFarland (about 20 miles up Hwy 99 from Bakersfield). Going into Bakersfield was considered a "really big thing" back then, because they had a mall.

You believe wrong. It was filmed mostly in SF and Marin County. The setting was supposed to be Modesto, a couple hundred miles north of Bakersfield. The filming sites are another hundred miles NW of that.

Funny stuff.

I was in Bakersfeild in 1965 twice..first and last time. Cerritos 30, Bakersfeild 26, that was the first time. Joe Blake just about ended my year early! My second visit was the Patato Bowl against Boise, Idaho. Do you even host this any more? You never mentioned the FOG. We were scheduled a Saturday night game and had to play in the fog Sunday day... it never cleared. Fog was so thick you couldn't see more that twenty yards. Oh! Cerritos 42, Boise 12.

Seriousley, the closest I have been to Bakersfeild since then is Tehachapi.

My cousins grew up in Bakersfield...Bake-tucky was always a funny way they described it.

As I understand, Bakersfield got huge with property values skyrocketing in LA (LA is not too far) but now they are hurting more than most, similar to Vegas.

That's "smoking". Barbecue, the real thing, is done over HOT direct heat, not some wussy fire somewhere next door ......................... And Tri Tip is the last choice of REAL Santa Maria Style Barbecutioners.

The Cap'n, cookin' like we did on the ranch.

Home of the Sonic drive in , Chuy's eatery and West Coast Cash. When Famoso Dragstrip runs the old school front engine nitro rails, there is a main street pancake breakfast along with a second course of uncorked street cruising driving.gif
This might be the last place on earth to hear/ see internal combustion after the Prius and EVs take over .
It cracks me up to see bathers in the run off water basins as you drive Hwy. 99 overpasses. Could be the infamous 'Dalers or '08ers !

Just to clear up any "Tri-Tip" questions. BTW most butchers east California will grind that cut for a "Sirloin Burger".
