It took me about 5 hours. I think it could be done in three but my kids kept getting in the way in one way or another,

If you are going to keep it together and displayed, put it in a model car case. All the little dimples in Legos collect dust like nobodies business, and dusting Legos will eventually break the model.

Yeah, I know, I have a few that dust gets everywhere. I looked for a plastic case but have yet to find one large enough that I like.
Build one yourself! Not quite as nice as the VW Bus but not bad
If only they had a 914 though.
