As the title goes, I'm just about pissed.

My car gets virtually no recognition. If I wasn't into 914's like I am, I might consider jumping ship to be a tail-dragger.

Perhaps I did my work too incognito.

Perhaps it looks too boring.

Perhaps most folks have no idea what the hell they are looking at.

Perhaps it's TOO MUCH of a SLEEPER!

Nobody seems to know what they are looking at when my 914 is at an event. Last year, I even went 914-6 with the steering column and EVERYTHING is functional. One of my last efforts will be to put the 914-6 tank where it belongs (in the stock location). After that, the only thing left on my list is to do the flares.

Right now it's a silver, stock looking 914 with nearly all 914-6 parts (with the exception of the wheels and those are 5-lug cookie cutters).

What does it take to get noticed when trying to maintain a semi-stock appearing 914?

Yours truly,

Your car is small, unobscure, and is in fact a vw. IF you only want attention, go buy a Cunt-ash. they always get noticed dry.gif

Man, did you pic the wrong car if you wanted notoriety.

Who cares about recognition?? I don't care what people think, I own my cars because **I** like them and don't try to please others.

Hell, I have the exact opposite problems.. People at gas stations, Home Depot and etc won't leave me alone in most of my cars.. They have 42 questions and want to know the life story of the car I am driving.. If you want attention buy a Pinzgauer or VW Iltis or VW Beetle with more Porsche parts than VW parts comprising it.. You'll want to go ballistic the first time you drive to Home Depot in a Pinzgauer.

Yours truly,

I wanted your problem, but the 7X16s wouldn't hold the power my twin plug 3.0 was putting out so I had to flare it, I was even going to use a 1.7 badge on a car that started life as a 2.0....

If you want to be noticed, put big Porsche badges on your car..

In all honesty, I don't drive a 914 for "recognition". I bought the car for the sheer love of driving. It's one of those cars that really puts the driver in touch with the road, and it's still street legal. If I wanted more attention I would've bought a 911.

Maybe you're better off in a Carrera GT? Sell those nice /6 cars of yours cheap, guarantee that'll ease your frustration. biggrin.gif

Thats wierd because I live in So Cal where hot exotic cars are seen daily, and my 914-4 1.7 is a plain jane. And almost on a daily basis I get complimented on how cool it is from the guys and how cute from the girls. So... Maybe you should move. poke.gif

I bought a 914 so people would stop recognizing me.

Hey man,
Thats a nice car!

There ya go.

Uh... you know if they recognize you you won't get away with it?
somd914
I go to C&C's, park smack in the middle of the sea of 911s and steal attention. On the road, I'm incognito which is fine with me.

I bought this car to drive, not to have people drool over it, but it does spark a lot more conversations that I ever thought it would.

If your looking for attention, buy one of those fine Italian prancing ponies or raging bulls and drive in front of me so I can drive fast w/o worry as all eyes will be on you.

agree.gif I live in Hollywood, in a $hitty apartment and my neighbor has 2 Lambos, 2 Ferraris and a Bently! He even offered to buy the teener!!!!

I always get a thumbs up in my 914 but, I didn't buy it for that. I bought it for how it handles.

Nothing chaps someones ass like getting burned on a freeway on-ramp by a VW powered go-cart! I constantly piss-off Corvettes. They'll kill me in a drag race, but I accelerate all the way around a 30MPH, 360 degree on-ramp. As I merge with freeway traffic at 65-70MPH, they're just letting off the brakes so they don't bust loose their rear end.

I learned that the sleeper is the way to go from my dad. His first car was a Rambler station wagon that would bury Vettes and Camaros of his day.

The fun is in the surprise!!! aktion035.gif

I did purchase my 914 from my uncle a few years ago because it was the only Porsche on which I got a ride and I was 14 years old at the time, loved the car ever since, my uncle made sure I did understand the importance and history of 914's so when I got it in 2008 all I did was acquire information on the car, car history, racing history, upgrades possibilities etc... now the car gets noticed, I get recognition but I do what I do because I love the car.... everything else is free!

I started hot-rodding my 914 with no purpose in mind....but had plenty of time to think about it. I'd been a rot-hodder at heart since my exposure to my uncles 40 Ford back in the fiftys. Marriage & kids put a halt to my first go arond with my own stuff back in the early 70s.....but the flame burned.

Durring the early years of 914ism (it was the late 90s by now) it still burned. The "problem" with hot rods is what do you do with then when you are done...or semi-done? Should it become an unending project or a useful toy? Autocross showed me it could be both.....and things went on from there. Recognition came with the territory, tho that was not my goal. Putting a fella in the car that could actually drive the thing got more.
Sure, I could have joined the fellas up the street in their monthly hot rod cruise-ins/car shows. Not my gig, sorry.

A 914 is not a static show piece....taint near pretty enough. It's good at what is does and can be made more so....but what it's good at can't be shown on public roads (IMO) with out risking life & limb...both yours & others. My advise would be get a different car or a different plan.

Just my opinions....but if ya don't like those, I have others. biggrin.gif

Where in Hollywood do you live?

My family owns the Yamashiro at the top of the hill!

I used to have a 914-6 when I live there and even in the early 80's I would get complemented on it!

This is a photo of it in front of The Magic Castle Hotel in 1984!

Drive around in it naked a few times. They will either notice your car and ignore you, or vise versa. Either way you will get some love. If they say " That sure is a small stick in that thing" don't take it personally. av-943.gif

My 7x15s dont hold the power of the 3.2 too well either. One day it will be flared.... I just dont want to paint it yet.

I'm guessing that the car just appears to be too stock and nobody knows what it is anymore. (or never knew)

The track car gets enough attention on the track. So much so, that I swear it boosts the economy by getting the Johnny come lately guys to spend bunches of money to keep up. I do like the occasional cruise-in, so perhaps I need to build a 'merican hot rod out of an old camaro or mustang.......

That's a beautiful car.

It sounds like you're annoyed by other people's ignorance. Be careful about that, studies have shown that there are a LOT of ignorant people out there. You know better, which should be a comfort, not a problem.

On the other hand if your car just isn't doing it for you then give it to me, I'll take that problem right off your hands. Please?

Funny, I've had exactly the opposite experience. Mine's a stock 914-6 (no flares or anything else which says "special"). We were recently at the local Toyota dealer purchasing a used Toyota for Ellen to commute to work in, and a couple of the salespeople were taking each others' pictures next to the car. Lots of other people were checking it out as well.

Of course, perhaps a bone stock 914 would stand out in a yard full of Toyotas. smile.gif

ezbngreen914
I think its because your car is not "matching numbers". It seems as if the Vin # on your car doesn't match the number of your zip code. Maybe you should think about trading your 914 for a BMX bike and a racing boat. beerchug.gif

I like you car and am jealous of the sleeper "6".

Maybe you need to race some of the tail draggers and show them that they spent way too much money to loose to a VW.

I don't care who notices my car. I like it.

I think the 914 is a plague to my family. The wife despises it as it take my time and money; hell she could get a facial for the price of my new Porterfield pads. The pads will last for years and she will need another facial next week.... she does not see it that way!

The kid only wants to go around corners fast and then he hates it because it takes my time. No matter how much I press he has little interest in it.

The bottom line is the car is for you (and us 914 freaks).
914Bryan
Hmmmm...I don't know what you mean...I was at a stop light in Newport Beach with my teener and my dog in the front seat.

Next to me was a paper plated Carrera 4 Cabrolet with a hot babe in the passenger seat (and I mean hot!). The people crossing the street were paying attention to my 4K ride and not the 120K+ babe ride. In fact, one dude looked at the driver of the Carrera and said "You need to learn somthing from this guy (me), his car is cool"!

I actually felt sorry for that guy. What a bunch of humble cheese he had to eat.

So along with everyone else on this post, don't know what you mean about the attention factor!!!!!

I get lots of people checking out my car when I stop for gas, groceries, etc., maybe it will happen to you a lot in the next while and then taper off again. Don't think your car isn't noticed, I'm sure it is, sometimes people just don't want to bug the owner. I get a little sassy sometimes but not in an impolite way, I don't want people to associate our cars with a rude encounter; when fueling up today a person asked if that was the original paint (my teener is pretty orange) I said no, it's this colour right now cause it's hunting season! He paused for a moment and then we both had a good laugh, and I explained yes it was the original paint. I like those brief encounters, just goes with owning one, don't despair it will happen to you as well.

Not sure why you don't get comments on your '6. My 914 is no beauty (it's a work in progress) and I get all kinds of comments.

Was tinkering on it a few weeks ago and a neighborhood kid about 8 or 9 yrs old stopped by to say "I like your car" smile.gif

The last two times I stopped for fuel, was asked about it. The first from a middle age woman who asked what kind of car it was. I told her a Porsche 914 and she said she never knew Porsche made a car that looked like that. She then showed me a photo of the car she is restoring... an early '70s(?) Dodge Polara confused24.gif I commented that my 914 could probably fit in the trunk of her car. She agreed.

Today while refueling, the guy at the next pump asked if my car was a "Porsch". I told him "Yes" and he asked if I minded if he took a look. I said "Go ahead" so he checked it out and he thought the car was cool. beerchug.gif

I am from east TN and people around here are, for the most part, super friendly.

I agree with those who say, "the wrong car for recognition". Period.

Don't worry about what others think or don't think. Enjoy your car for what it is.

A little attention can be had if you...
1) Leave the BIG # on the car after the PCA DE events.
2) Spend BIG $$$ on a sexy (& functional) looking fuel system.
3) Spend more $$$ on a functional chassis stiffining cage.
4) Lastly...stuff a big modern engine in the thing (people don't know what kind of car it is but they do know what a Corvette is...)
5) NO ONE knows whats coming = Priceless!!!!! driving.gif aktion035.gif
