That certainly doesn't look stock. It's from a for sale ad and the poster said nothing about a Type IV or anything. What is it?

Yep and it is a type 4....wait...or is it a type 1???
wingnut86
Yep, 4 main designs that I am aware of.

1) FAT - Upright cooling
2) RABY Automotive Machine - Down The Middle "DTM"
3) Tangerine Racing (Chris) - Horizontal Fan Cooling System similar to what the original Corvair used, but nicer
4) Sharpbuilt/Australia - Shorter Upright unit cooling/requires custom cutting and shortening of oil breather riser

There are additional companies out there that complete similar upgrades.

A friend of mine has one of these hanging on his wall. Bought it to put in a 914 but has never gotten around to it.

Hard to tell but I'm thinking it is a type 1
Note the runners on the manifolds look narrow. Also the bottom edge of the shroud looks odd. Can't tell for sure, but are those exhaust cut-outs where a T1 port would be?
I'm wondering if it's a CSP for T1.

I've used Sharpbuilt (as well as a DTM and FAT) so I know that's not one.

Look at where the plugs are...Type one for sure.

Skip - I think it's a FAT cooling fan on a T-4, but Ron also puts the fan tower on 356 & 912 motors.

We had a 912 at the OCR-PCA Zone 8 Concours last June with theis set-up that we had to put in the modified division due to a similar engine mod.

rolleyes.gif So what makes you think it's a FAT shroud eh Tom ?? poke.gif

I'm not convinced.
How come your pic shows the fan belt almost 90* vertical and the one on the 912 the belt is definitely offset?
The manifold doesn't look T4 to me and the plug wire looks almost beside the head intake (like a T1) instead of slightly above it.

Many have made 911 shrouds for both T4 and T1

Wish it was a better pic.

Here's the ad, It's a 912 (356) engine.

This is a numbers matching 912 on which the former owner just spent over $14000 on brakes, engine and what have you.
The engine is upgraded with large pistons, has the 911 package with electric fuel pump, thermostatically controlled oil cooler, full flow oil filter, extractor exhaust and more.

Its a Bergmann shroud. I can tell by the fan, shape of the shroud and the strap across the top of the fan. The engine looks like a 616 to me, and not a T1 or TIV. See that angle under the alternator stand and the dizzy clamp?

Bergmann has been making 356/616 shroud kits for a while now.

This is not a FAT system, FAT is wise enough not to use the water-cooled VW alternator with their kits, all of them I have seen utilize the OEM 911, 11 blade fan, not the 12 blade fan like this one.

In our world we refer to this type of cooling solution as a "dumb blonde". It looks good, but its just plain dumb.

AWESOME place for the oil cooler.. Lets pull hot air off the oil and preheat the air thats going to cool the cylinders and heads. Thats a great idea in the Arctic. Looks kill.
