Well... the 914-6 is done. All the rubber, seals, bumpers windows etc. have been put back in. Last task was to clean out and install the gas tank. I used new lines up front and none are pinched etc. The car won't start.

I can't hear the pump. I can usually detect the whine and hear the gurgles in the tank once it starts. I checked the wiring to the pump and it is fine. Does the fuel pump need to be primed after the tank has come out??

Help me with the final step...

The fuel pump should make noise even if it needs priming. Indeed, it will probably make MORE noise. Try touching the pump with the key on and see if you can feel it operating. I always try to use at least one clear or translucent fuel filter in the line on carb'd systems so I can see fuel flowing.

It's probably that small motor. I heard those things aren't worth having!

Pump no workie... I pulled the plug while the key was on. While replacing it you can hear a solenoid type clicking sound from the pump as I plug the wires back on.

Do these fuel pumps go bad at any given time or is this because it sat dry for a couple of months? Or... is there anything else that might breath life into this pump?

Before I blamed the pump, I'd check for a good ground there, and make sure you're really seeing +12 out of the wire to it, and not, say, +8 or something. Try running a pair of fat (14g) wires directly from the battery posts to the pump terminals, too. If that doesn't make it go whirrr, THEN I'd blame the pump.

Sounds silly but check your fuses, and has anyone ever messed with the wiring under there? I have seen more than one car with a jumper switch that is a anti theft wich disconnects power to pump.

why not replace it with a facet? I know it's a bit noisy, but I like the noise, it tells me it's working?
They're pretty damn reasonable $-wise, too.

Because I'm the second caretaker of this car and it's bone stock...

I cleaned it up a bit and decided I'd see what makes these things tick (or not tick in this case). I took the nose cone off and shocked her with another 12v. Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Smiling because I didn't have to spend a bundle getting a new pump ($345.00) and pissed because... well you know why!

same thing happened to me before when my car sat unused for an extended period of time. tapping it with a hammer fixed it.
