So I came across this while looking at another thread on Pelican. I've seen the scissor lift's before. I've been scrolling Craigslist for the last year or so for one. While in the other thread there was a link to Harbor freight.
scissor lift With one of their 20% off coupons that get's it down to $800. That is very reasonable.
So my question is who has one? Can you pull your motor with one without interference? What are the pro's & cons of them?
Old thread I am reviving as I finally am buying one

Yes I have one and love it! Best chocie if you don't have the head room for a two post lift. No problem pulling the motor, only issue is clearing over the top of the lift. I bought mine from Greg Smith equipment in Indy. Its a 6000lb lift so I can put the truck on it also if I wanted to. Gets the car 45 inches in teh air, while I can't walk under I am able to use a rolling stool. Mine was about $1500 wit tax, sure wish I would have bough tthis sooner. I followed another members plans for making ramps and it works great. Here is my project car on my lift.

I bought my Ammco scissor used off Craigslist for $800.00 best tool I've ever purchased as far as I'm concerned. Made installing the six in my 914 a piece of cake. I ended up recessing mine into the floor.

Did you post that on "Garagejournal.com" Several projects there about recessing a lift into the floor.

To be honest I didn't look at the HF one. I would say things to look for is to make sure it has a safety lock. With mine you hold the safety handle while you rasie the lift. Once at the height you want you release the handle and lower it (maybe 1/4 inch) until it settles into the locked position. Also stability, I was able to got to the Greg Smith business location and try the lift out. Also make sure that the location you plan to use it on is level. One last thing is these things are heavy! While they are "portable" I sure as heck wouldn't want to try and drag it around the garage all the time. Mine is at 1klbs so you need a

to move it around.

I went on the low end and found a tire chief on CL...about $350 I can do most repairs and there is room also to drop the motor.

I like mine alot. It only goes up 48 inches but as you can see my ceiling won't allow much higher than that anyway.

Nope did it myself. Marked out the cut line with a sharpie pen and then rented a wet saw from H.D. and went to town. I rented the biggest they had which was a good thing because the concrete was 6-8 inches thick. Then rented a electric jackhammer and busted it up. Placed some rebar in and then made a floating form. Called a concrete company to come and pour/level/finish. Came out great but I will NEVER do that again.........hard work !!!

Slits is going to be mad but I picked up a used 6000lb mid-rise lift in his neck of the woods, Crestline, last year for $200. I scored big time. Its at a friends shop in Gardena so I get to use it whenever I need it. I'm thinking about bringing it down to my place in Orange and keeping it in my mfg shop.

Found a snap on 3500lb scissor lift. It is about 12 years old & everything works great. Guy wants $900 for it & I am waiting for full size pics in my email. Supposed to get them in an hour or so. Should I not jump on it? Oh it lifts up to 35"

35" lift and 3500 capacity isn't very much. I know it's a Snap-On, but it think I'd keep looking.

I know 3500 lbs isn't alot. It is enough for any 914 though

. Although Harbor freight has one right at a grand. I guess $900 isn't that great a deal

I bought mine about three years ago from Quality Tool and Equipment. 42660 Rio Nedo, Temecula, Ca.
951-296-3860. 48 inch rise and 6000lb limit. I paid $1000 for it. Shopping around just now, I couldn't find one for less than $1500. Try to find one that rises at least 48 inches and 6000 lbs. I don't think you would be happy with anything less. Good luck.

You should tell him you will give him $600. I don't care if it is Snap-on. It is used and you can get a new lift for $800. So you are not being rude in offering that at all

Yeah I am going to pass. Unless he makes me a deal I can't refuse. I am going to buy a nice lift. Even if I have to sell my enclosed trailer to do it. I found a good little tilt trailer to haul my cars on. So my enclosed trailer is an extra luxury. I would sure as hell get more use out of a lift. I may just be putting my Enclosed trailer up for sale. I could buy a new lift no problem then.
Here is a pic of the lift

So after considering selling my enclosed trailer. I decided it was a good idea. I will get so much more use out of the lift. I listed it last night on Craigslist & here. Sold it to the first guy who called on it. Kinda bummed to have sold it

. Although I only have a deposit. It being the weekend they didn't have all the cash. I get it monday after work. Which works just fine as I called about my brand new lift. It is made by Quality lifts & will run me $1750 delivered & setup. Here are the specs

My car is 4 1/2". Would have to build ramps
Do other lifts need ramps? Kelty how is yours?

Not to worry Dave. That was taken right after installing the floor. Trust me, it doesn't quite look like that any longer. That plastic flooring is great if you're only going to park a car on it. If you are actually going to work in the garage...Not quite so good.

Just a word of caution as I found this out the hard way....
When these companies rate their lifts at 48" that is the full lift height off the ground with all attachments installed. Sounds great huh? Well that's not actual lift, you have to subtract the amount of height when it's collapsed (with all the attachments on) and that might be 8 inches to give you an actual lift of 40". It's a really crappy way to rate them. You need to ask how much actual "hydraulic lift" they have. That means the actual MOVEMENT upward and that is far less than the specs. Unfortunately 80% of the companies can't even tell you that spec or understand it.
After learning the hard way I bought a nice Bend Pak SP-7 with a 6 foot lift and sunk it in the concrete. Here are two pics on top of the concrete and then after I sunk it. It's an awesome lift that you can stand under, not crawl under. I'm getting too old for that crawling routine.

Okay Reviving this older thread. I didn't end up buying one last time around. I am buying a Bend Pak MD-6XP this saturday. It is a year old & the guy bought a 2 post lift for his shop instead. I am buying it for $1200 & it's about $1800 new without freight. I've been watching for quite a while & for a good quality lift. This looks to be a good price. I went away from the harbor freight lift. While I like to buy the random tool there that I don't use every day. The thought of putting myself under one of their lifts was

for any length of time. I will get some picks up as soon as I get back. I'll need to make some ramps to sit on the sides. At least until it is in the air
