This 914 has been mistreated to different respects in it's former life and currently I am fixing a lot of that. I have installed the SS fuel line kit from Tangerine Racing, and have cleaned the tank and replaced all the fuel lines with the latest greatest ethanol happy compound. The fuel pump slips into the bracket on the firewall, does the wire connector face down, or towards the rear? Also are there any seals inside that will be damaged if I disassemble the pump for a rebuild?

I think the connector faces down based on what I remember from the workshop manual pictures. The FP has an o-ring under the "face" that you would remove is you took out the bolts. There are some little rollers that you'd want to make sure you didn't lose if you took it apart. I'd have a replacement o-ring in hand if I took it apart, if it were me......problem is finding a replacement o-ring....

Don't know if what you read is true, my 914 73 2.0L is on blocks since 1985 but I just moved the fuel pump under the tank..... got 74 Fuel Blister and all.... there are claims of vapor lock and in Dallas it get hot. Others might say you do not need to move it.....

I think this is pretty close to the standard installation

As Jim said - the replacement rubber is the downfall of any attempt to rebuild. Yes you can clean it up but that really is not going to correct any faults. If it is leaking you probably need new rings. If it is sticking in by-pass you need a new rubber nipple on the pop off. Seems to be impossible to find the rubber.

If you do open it you will probably find the rings are too big to reinstall. They expand significantly in contact with fuel. To get them back in you have to completely dry them out. That's either a long wait, use of an autoclave, or perhaps a microwave although I don't know what either of those two will do to the life of the rubber. Be really careful when reassembling that you don't pinch the rubber.

I haven't done it but there is a post where someone successfully rebuilt the electrical end. The brushes were sticking and the pump wouldn't spin. He took apart the bottom end and cleaned out the brush slideway.
